Dear OUSD Community,
I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Spring Break. As restrictions continue to lessen due to improved statistics on the Orange County COVID-19 Dashboard, we are excited to start planning year-end celebrations for our graduating and promoting students. At this time, graduations are scheduled for June 9 and 10 at Fred Kelly Stadium. Each graduate will be allowed two attendees, and the event will be live-streamed. Depending on Orange County’s tier on the COVID-19 Dashboard when graduations are scheduled, the number of attendees allowed may be adjusted accordingly. Elementary and middle school promotion details will be shared with families from their children’s school site leaders.
In addition, we are planning to celebrate our graduates with banners placed throughout the cities we serve, as well as on our campuses. We ask our interested seniors to please apply for this prestigious recognition via our Google form. Individuals will be selected based upon how closely their experiences reflect the six domains of the OUSD Graduate Profile, so we ask that submissions are as thorough as possible. The Google Document must be completed by Friday, April 16. We are also open to any suggestions or feedback the community would like to contribute.
We are so proud of our Class of 2021 and look forward to seeing the impact they will have in the future.
Warmest Regards,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D.

In Our Schools
Over one hundred California Elementary School students and their families participated in a Virtual At-Home STEAM Night before Spring Break. Students selected from eight different activities, such as “Gobs of Fun,” the mixing of compounds and solutions, investigating fingerprints, and even designing and building a balloon-powered “Rocket Racer.” The STEAM activities were supported with Nearpod Lessons, Brainpop, and videos. By far, the most important part of the evening was the student discussion: Students shared questions, comments, and even suggestions for further exploration around many topics. It was an exciting night to see iInspire Academy students share their imaginations, critical thinking, and expressive language to work through the engineering process.

CHOC Mental Health Art & Word Contest
The CHOC Mental Health Art & Word Contest is intended to inspire, inform, reflect, and heighten community awareness around mental health while also reducing stigma. Between April 1 and April 30, all school-age children and teens (pre-k to grade 12) are invited to submit visual and written art addressing the theme of “Checking In,” defined as supporting the mental health of ourselves, family, friends, neighbors, persons who are isolated or frail, caregivers and others who serve our community by “checking in” on them.
Winners will be selected in two categories (Art and Word) from each of the three age groups:
- Elementary (pre-k to grade 5)
- Middle School/Junior High (grade 6 - 8)
- High School (grade 9 -12)
Winners will be announced on May 14 on choc.org/checkin and will be contacted to be awarded prizes. A selection of artwork will be featured online, at CHOC and community locations, on social media, and more. More information is online at https://www.choc.org/mental-health-awareness-month/art-word-contest/
Mind Out Loud – Middle and High School Mental Health Event
Wellness Together School Mental Health, in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and the California Department of Education, will host Mind Out Loud – a free three-day virtual event on May 4-6 from 3:30-5:00 PM. This event is for middle and high school students to convene to discuss mental health; connect with peers across California; hear from engaging speakers to become equipped with practical tools for wellness; increase mental health awareness and advocacy for themselves and friends; learn about suicide prevention; and reduce stigma associated with mental health.
