Principal's Newsletter
August 16, 2019
From the Principal
Dear Parents,
What a great start to our school year! That would not be possible without a staff and community that works hand in hand. Our kids have jumped right in to learning this week and I have also seen multiple examples of students learning about and spreading kindness. I want to welcome you again to another fantastic year. This year it is my goal to say less here and develop my newsletter more in a bullet point style. That way you can read it quickly because I realize you all have very busy family lives.
*Shout-out to all of our bus drivers who have endured the triple digit heat indexes this week and each day gotten our students home safely. I will be riding all buses the first three weeks of school and look forward to seeing you on a route soon!
*Special thanks to our custodial team for having our building day one ready.
*Welcome to all of our new staff and teachers. We have several and we will highlight them over the year so you can get to know them better.
*Welcome to all of our new Colt families. We are happy to have you in Milton! We have kids coming from all over including Brazil and local private schools. We are so happy you chose us.
*Thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the summer to spruce up the outside of our campus. From daisy and girl scout troops to Green Space parent volunteers, everyone has played a significant role. Special thanks to Jeff McLaughlin who put in some extra work as a dad on the side.
We have some big events coming up soon and I want to get those on your radar:
*Our Watchdog Dad Kickoff date had to be changed due to a conflict with Northwestern. The new date is Monday, 8/26, at 6:00 p.m. on the grounds of Friendship Park. If you want to participate as a volunteer dad this year, please join us to learn more.
*On Wednesday, 8/28, we will kick off college football season. All staff and students are encouraged to wear their favorite college gear!
I hope you have an amazing weekend and we look forward to seeing you Monday!

SCREENAGERS
Followed by a Panel Discussion
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time - friction she knew all too well.
SCREENAGERS takes a deeply personal approach into the vulnerable corners of family life to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
