The Cardinal Way

Life is really good at giving us problems, challenges, and changes to confront daily and sometimes hourly. They are always there, no matter what you do, no matter how smart you are, no matter how positive you are; problems will always exist. The most successful people I have encountered do, during times of challenge that sets them apart, retain a positive attitude about the challenge, regardless of the circumstances. They realize their reaction to the change at hand is what makes the difference. Things change, of course, they do, but how we react to that change and how we attack problems is our choice. As educators, we are part of a profession of change; and it changes- a lot. Ultimately, our job is to make a change in our students. It is our responsibility to be the change. So, change is unavoidable, and more pointedly, the mission, in the profession we chose. In this, the attitude we have each day is the most important thing we bring to our profession. As educators, our attitude can be buried in comfort, support, trust, inadequacies, and a variety of other deeply personal things. While our attitude is extremely personal, it is never a secret. Regardless of the reasons behind our attitude, we wear it on our sleeves. Our students, colleagues, and loved ones, can all tell us how positive or negative our attitude is on a minute-by-minute basis. But we must remember that our attitude is always our choice; it is always in our control.

Week 14: Grateful Friday Challenge

YES! YES! YES! We have made it to another Friday in YESvember! It is interesting to me that just a small change in the normal routine can make a big difference. Like changing a no to a yes, like looking for a positive way to phrase something that could be deemed bad news, like getting to rather than having to. Still, it seems to me we are always up against something. There is always a great divide that separates us. And when we come up against something that causes division… you know something... FUNDAMENTAL… It is always a good idea to have open discussions about it and find common ground that we can all gather around.

Today, let’s let our voices in the halls be heard as we hash out the age-old battle… When is it too early to break out the Winter Holiday Songs and Festivities and Festive Wear? Are you on Team Thanksgiving Needs Some Respect? Or do you recognize that Thanksgiving is pretty great. Still, you are repping Team Holiday Lights and already have your radio tuned into the 24/7 Holiday Songs that are already playing on a few radio stations?

So, for this installment of the #SHSGFC, we need a sign or a signal to show which team we are supporting -- in trying to come up with something quick -- if you are on Team Thanksgiving, you get the easy job- wear your ID regularly. If you are on Team Holiday Lights, flip your ID badge upside down in your lanyard. As you are out walking the halls, stopping by the copier, checking your mailbox, on restroom duty, or just hanging out with your colleagues in the hallways between classes on this super chilly Friday -- hash it out. List the pros and the... pros for your side. Listen politely to those who might not agree with your side (which is obviously correct), and then, in the end, agree that the holidays are all pretty great and each will have their time soon enough.

Mr. Snodgrass's IDEW students have been developing and designing a robot that will meet a need in our world. Today, students discussed the importance of creating a positive brand for their product. Students looked at different marketing cards, read articles, and practiced an elevator speech about their brand. Students will take the information they learned today and create a marketing card that can be used at their final presentation of their robot.

Mrs. Cullison's Trigonometry students are studying reference angles. Students created a chart that they could use to help determine the appropriate reference angle. In groups, students were given different reference points. They discussed the quadrant the reference point would exist and then determine the appropriate angle used for reference.

Mrs. Jordan's Nutrition and Wellness students are learning about the effects of sugar on their bodies. Students learned about how much sugar is recommended for a person each day and how excess sugar consumption can negatively impact their health. To bring some practical examples into the learning, students looked at different drinks they consume on a daily basis and determined the number of teaspoons each one of those drinks contains.

Mrs. Stanley's EL students are improving their graphing skills. Students looked at a sample set for data about how much ice cream is consumed during the summer months. Students then took that data and learned how to graph the data in multiple ways. After students created their graphs to discussed which graph made it easier to interpret the information.
