MMS Weekly Update
February 9, 2024
Highlight of the Week
In Algebra, Mrs. Melton's classes are working on simplifying expressions containing exponents. To help review the concept, students are doing an activity where the answer for one problem leads them to the next problem.
In Mr. Hughes math classes, 7th graders are currently working on finding sums and differences of rational numbers, his 8th graders are working on solving, graphing and interpreting linear equations.
In geometry, Mr. Admiraal's classes have been learning about similarity. They are just ending that unit and will next be learning about the Pythagorean Theorem and its applications.
In pre-algebra and 8th grade math lab, the students are learning how to solve systems of equations. They will also be learning how to set up systems of equations from word problems and will then be solving the word problems.
Donations Needed
Cold and flu season is upon us. We are low on tissue and many of our vendors have a lengthy back order time. If you are able to send in tissue with your student to drop off in the main office or give to any of their classroom teachers, it is greatly appreciated!
Spirit Week
LEGO Pullback Car Event
After school, on Tuesday, March 12th, we will be offering an exciting event together with both
Centennial and Millennium Middle Schools through Genius Education. This is an On-Site Field trip which
consists of a 75-minute session (plus time for a pizza break) where “student engineers” will learn all
about simple machines and their real-world applications. Each student will build a “Pullback Car” while
learning all about the engineering / mechanics involved. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) concepts will be emphasized. Integrated problem solving, teamwork, and collaboration are
additional concepts that will be reinforced. Also, all students get to take home the Pullback Car they
build!

Our next event will be on the topic of Marijuana - informal discussion about how this legal drug is not good for young brains that are still growing and ways to introduce refusal skills to your children. Non-Homestead Operating Millage Renewal & Restoration Election 2024
On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, South Lyon Community School district voters will be asked whether to approve the non-homestead operating millage. The Non-homestead operating millage is the school district’s operating millage and has a direct impact on the per pupil foundation allowance that the district receives from the State of Michigan.
If approved, the non-homestead operating millage would result in no increase in taxes to primary homestead homeowners.
The operating millage would be for a period of 10 years, 2025-2034.
This renewal, if approved, would keep the existing 18 mills tax levy on businesses, rental properties and second homes.
This renewal, if approved, would maintain an estimated $15 million for the general operations of the school district in 2025.
If the operating millage renewal fails and is not available to levy in 2025, every operation of the school district would be closely analyzed in order to cut from the future budget to account for the loss in revenue.
More information is available on the SLCS website at www.slcs.us so voters can make an informed decision about this millage proposal.
Please email requestinfo@slcs.us if you have any questions.
