Early Dismissal Days will be June 12th and June 14th
Dear La Ballona Families,
Summer Break is just around the corner! Teachers and students are busy finishing the school year by packing the classrooms, creating in fun school events, sharing memories, completing report cards, and spending time together before we say our goodbyes. Please help your child empty out their backpacks daily as teachers begin sending home all of their materials used in the classroom this year. Stop by and check the lost and found area for any missing items your child may have left at school. Anything left after June 14th, will be donated. Over the summer, students will have access to use same District apps they used during the school year. We encourage your child to utilize them and continue reading a variety of books.
As the school year comes to an end, so do a range of feelings or jitters. They may feel excited to head off to a family trip. They may have a sense of relief because school is over and no more work to complete. A level of sadness and questions may come, for example, will see their friends over the summer? Some students may experience some anxiety wondering what next school year might be like. Teachers have different activities planned to ease emotions felt by our students. It's a wonderful opportunity to thank your child’s teacher again for all of their hard work, support, partnership and care during this school year.
As 5th Grade is preparing to leave La Ballona and transition to Middle School, they have been working hard getting ready for their promotion. We are so excited to have our 5th grade families join us on Thursday, June 13th at 9:30 am as we recognize and highlight your child's experience years at La Ballona!
Congratulations Class of 2024!
Additionally, it's amazing how much our Kindergarten students have grown this school year and will too transition on to first grade. How exciting! Please join our amazing Kindergarten Teachers on Friday, June 14th at 9 am as they celebrate the accomplishments your child has made this school year!
We wish all of our students, families, and staff a wonderful time relaxing and rejuvenating for the upcoming school year. We appreciate all of your support this year. For the families leaving us this year, thanks for being a huge part of the La Ballona Community. To our returning families, we'll see you for the 2024/2025 school year!
With Lion's Pride!

Two White Rabbits/Dos conejos blancos by Jairo Buitrago
Story Read Aloud (English & Spanish)
Rationale: In this moving and timely story, a young child describes what it is like to be a migrant as she and her father travel north toward the US border.
They travel mostly on the roof of a train known as The Beast, but the little girl doesn’t know where they are going. She counts the animals by the road, the clouds in the sky, the stars. Sometimes she sees soldiers. She sleeps, dreaming that she is always on the move, although sometimes they are forced to stop and her father has to earn more money before they can continue their journey.
As many thousands of people, especially children, in Mexico and Central America continue to make the arduous journey to the US border in search of a better life, this is an important book that shows a young migrant’s perspective.
Guiding Questions:
Look at a map of Central America, Mexico and the United States with students to show them where Two White Rabbits takes place. Mira un mapa de América Central, México y Estados Unidos con los estudiantes para mostrarles dónde tiene lugar "Dos conejos blancos".
Defining the term immigrant An immigrant is a person that decides to permanently move to another country, a country they weren’t born in. Sometimes a person has to become an immigrant because in their country they can’t find work to make a living, pay rent, or buy food. Other times people have to make this decision because their country is dangerous, it might be at war, and it is not safe to continue living there. Although they love their country, their lives are in danger. When a person finds themselves in these difficult or dangerous circumstances, they can’t wait to have all the paperwork the new country they are moving to requires.

2. Counselor's Corner
Dear La Ballona Community,
As we wrap up the school year, I want to take a moment to thank you for your support and partnership throughout the year. As we head into the summer break, I wanted to share some Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) tips to support your child's well-being during the break. Encouraging them to practice self-care, engage in activities they enjoy, and spend quality time with loved ones can have a positive impact on their overall mental health. Additionally, I have compiled some resources that you may find helpful in continuing to foster your child's social and emotional development over the summer. You can find social-emotional learning and mental health resources in this month's newsletter. You can also find family resources including clothing and supplies, employment, food, housing, grief support, and much more on our Family Services website (link)
Thank you once again for a fantastic school year. Wishing you and your family a restful and rejuvenating summer break!
Warm regards,
Counselor Ulloa-Serrano
