Mt. Lake Shore
It truly is a Winter Wonderland atop our new sledding hill located beside Kennedy Middle School.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio tweeted, "No devices, no screen time, kids just playing outdoors. That's some good stuff right there!"
This is Pure Michigan. It's gr-r-reat!
We invite you to the best sledding hill in metro Detroit, a place where the fun factor is always high. But don't take our word for it. The Thomas Family visited recently with their two young girls Emma and Hannah. We watched as these two, ages 4 and 5, sped down the snow-covered hill on sleds. They raced, they smiled, and most importantly, they made memories. They weren't the only ones.
Chad Johnson, Principal at Kennedy Middle School, rewarded students who earned all As with a trip to the sledding hill. Seventh grader Fiona Kucel invited her two-year-old brother to join. Little Sean tucked himself into the front off the sled, held in place by Fiona and her friend as they traveled downhill. It was special for them and the rest of the 43 middle schoolers who participated.
Saint Clair Shores resident Matt Thompson posted, "Fun times atop Sleddy McSledface. Thank you to whoever had a part in putting this sledding hill here." He added, "We had a great time sledding on Friday night we had to go back again Saturday. The hill was busy with families and groups coming and going. Everyone really enjoyed it. We are so happy to have a sledding hill close in the Shores. As long as it snows we will be sledding."
We appreciate the partnership between Lake Shore Public Schools and Barton Malow for bringing this idea to life and thanks to your help, we now have an official name for it: Mt. Lake Shore.
We encourage you to share your sledding photos by sending them to social@lsps.org.
Spirited Lions Fans
Your biggest fans of the Detroit Lions hail from Masonic Heights Elementary and we have video evidence from inside the classroom and at an all-school assembly of these superfans singing and roaring to Gridiron Heroes, the official fight song. Led by Principal Barranca, students were encouraged to go all out in a unified, #OtherPeopleMatter effort to support their favorite NFL team. They even made their debut on Fox 2 Detroit. Go Lions!

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE
People with the character strength of social intelligence are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. They understand why they do things.
In Mrs. Fain's MiCI class at Lake Shore High School, students have the opportunity to participate in Career Based Instruction (CBI) and learn how-to become more socially intelligent.
Students are placed at ACE Hardware, the Saint Clair Shores Library, EOS Cafe, and American House for the purpose of providing work experience and career exploration and given work of instructional value.
This year students had the opportunity to work at South Lake High School's Bistro. Every Monday and Tuesday Seniors Greg, Derrick, and Tyler work at The Bistro.
With the assistance of Chef Michelle Downs and Paraprofessional Mrs. Sue, everything runs smoothly. "Mrs. Sue is so nice and helpful," Tyler complimented. Chef Michelle explained, "These students are expert dishwashers. They sanitize sinks and put away clean items. They have learned how to do laundry, sweep and wipe down the dining room, and even make cookies!"
Mrs. Sue models social intelligence and is an expert at sensing how other people feel, knowing intuitively what to say in social situations, and seemly self-assured, even in a larger crowd. She helps her students improve their "people skills."
Lead teacher Mrs. Fain is proud of this program. She said, "It helps develop strong positive relationships with employers and facilitates ongoing employment opportunities."
In addition, Shorian student chefs who are stationed at the South Lake Bistro, wear red hats and work side-by-side with student chefs from Lakeview and South Lake to make delicious meals.
Between classroom and kitchen instruction, Chef Michelle and her 21 Lake Shore consortium students plan weekly menus, develop recipes, and learn all aspects of the food service industry. In the initial weeks, they discussed kitchen workflow, sourcing products for quality and price, and volunteer opportunities!
Students can also earn their ServSafe Food Handler Certificate which verifies basic food safety knowledge and is for individuals in food handler employee-level positions.
Bonus: The MISD is once again looking for nominations for the annual Make A Difference Award sponsored by the MISD Parent Advisory Committee. Please use this form if you would like to nominate a teacher, paraprofessional, social worker, speech pathologist or psychologist who is involved in your child's education.
Senior Leadership students helped Lake Shore High School MoCI students with job questionnaires and applications at Friendship Circle. Although students are ineligible for this MISD award, they certainly make a difference!
FORGIVENESS
People with the character strength of forgiveness like to forgive those who have done wrong. They accept that people make mistakes.
At Violet Elementary Spelling Bees, mistakes turned in to more opportunities to practice and continue to hone their aptitude for spelling.
With correct spelling of the word rewarding fifth grader Emma Teed from Violet Elementary was announced the champion of the All-Stars Spelling Bee. Her number was #1 and she began and ended the competition. Congratulations!
Teachers along with supportive parents, worked tirelessly to help participants practice for this competition. Round by round, students took turns spelling words from the official list. They were allowed to have a word repeated, used in a sentence, or defined.
Second place runner-ups from Violet Elementary were Jaxon Herring and Danae Summey. They misspelled distain and engulf, but chose to not beat themselves up about it. Jaxon and Danae had very different ways of preparing for the competition. Jaxon crammed while Danae studied over time. However, they both shared the same philosophy about mistakes: Mistakes will make you try harder next time and get back up again. Wise thoughts from these 5th graders!
Danae went on to describe a time during her NWEA test where she felt defeated. She went down 1 point and wasn't satisfied because she always wants to improve. She released that 1 point wasn't a big deal and smiled through her initial disappointment.
One of the best parts of the entire competition was the love passed on by classmates like Ti'Mani Fountain. She crossed her fingers, clapped, and smiled for all contestants from her spectator chair. She wanted everyone to win.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Cheering others' success (2/5-9) and Love (2/12-16).
Inspiration
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
Do you love Art? Music? Writing? Performing? Would you like the opportunity to be inspired by some of the best? The Emily Tims Committee is pleased to offer a scholarship for a trip to the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for one of our Shorians. Carrington Barnes was our first winner in 2022!
Emily Tims Memorial Blue Lake Scholarship
Their mission to inspire young artists to achieve their potential has not wavered since their first day of camp in 1966. We are pleased to continue that tradition in 2023 and look forward sending one Shorian to camp this summer. DEADLINE TO APPLY: Monday, February 5th at 1pm.
Love is Magic, Good for the Heart
February is the month of love. Thank you for joining us at our Love is Magic parent-child date night event hosted by our LSFEE.
It was a memorable evening for 5th grader Eva Seymour and her family. She was called to the stage to perform a special magic trick and received a colorful stuffed bear as a gift. She said, "I liked how Jasen Magic interacted with the audience. He was funny and I had lots of fun!"
Smiles and laughter from 175 guests filled the auditorium at Lake Shore High School as Jasen mesmerized his audience with disappearing water, a jumping snake, the secret to counting jellybeans, talking oranges, and cheesy jokes! It was awesome!
Thank you Michael Agnello Jewelers for sponsoring the event!
The Foundation was established in 1986 for the purpose of using charitable contributions to benefit all Lake Shore Public Schools' students. Their mission is to help students reach their goals of excellence by funding support for important educational activities not provided by the schools.
Each year on the first Friday in February, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, The Heart Truth® and others around the country celebrate National Wear Red Day® to bring greater attention to heart disease as a leading cause of death for Americans and steps people can take to protect their heart.
Lake Shore Public Schools wore red to support #OurHeart. And remember, laughter and lightheartedness may actually help protect your heart.
Innovation
Brain Breaks
Rain, rain go away. Come again another day.
Students at Violet Elementary love to play and play during indoor recess is a great solution. Indoor recess provides a comfortable and dry environment for students to play and have fun without being affected by the weather conditions.
We watched as these All-Stars played with dominos, used their imaginations at the vet station, colored pictures, and had conversations with friends. These activities helped strengthen friendships and improved social skills.
Every kid needs a break from focused learning and we enjoyed watching them recharge using the freedom to choose activities that interest them.
Brain breaks are powerful.
Brain breaks are short periods of time when we change up the routine to refresh thinking. Regularly incorporating movement helps reenergize the body and soul.
When making the decision to rest, it is crucial not to feel guilty. Removing yourself from work for a while can really help with your health and studies as it improves memory, serves as an energy booster, reduces stress, improves health, and boosts performance and creativity.
And sometimes our Specials feel like a brain break.
Mrs. Perryman and Ms. Rhadigan's Special classes at Rodgers Elementary joined forces to create a music and art lesson mashup! Most recently, Ms. Rhadigan's class created Lions-themed art. These photos made us smile.
First grader Adrienne Frank loves singing and dancing. In fact, that's what makes her happiest. That and playing with her baby cousin Noah.
Thank you Teachers Mrs. Domagalski and Mrs. Lynn for sharing such creative kids with us as we listened to their mashup performance.
DrumFIT in Physical Education
DrumFIT is a cardio drumming program that combines the mental health benefits of drumming with the overall health benefits of physical fitness for a full body workout.
Students used this activity at Masonic Heights Elementary to the tune of Baby Shark. See video clip.
Our Building Trades class at Lake Shore High School built the DrumFIT rack for the benefit of DrumFIT storage at Masonic Heights Elementary while the Lake Shore Foundation funded this grant in 2020.
But that's not all! DrumFIT is part of all elementary Physical Education classes and kids in all 3 elementary buildings have so many reasons why they love using this commercial grade equipment built to sustain thousands of beats.
Fifth grader Charlotte Partridge said, "DrumFIT is so fun! She loves drumming along to music and drumming is a great way to get your aggression out!"
In his first year, PE Teacher Mr. Brosnan has inspired so many students to enjoy Physical Education. He shared this success story with us:
"The first success story that comes to mind is about a fifth-grade student of mine. Our social worker observed one of my classes and she shared with me how impressed she was with the student compared to last year. She said he would rarely participate in P.E. or even talk. He was actively engaged in all of the activities and was talking to me! I am not taking all of the credit, but I like to think I have a small part in that! Having all of my students be engaged is a big goal of mine."
Mr. Brosnan enjoys the wonderful staff and students he sees every day at Lake Shore. "It is awesome to still be apart of this district after graduating from here in 2018."
Since 2006 DrumFIT has developed and advanced cardio-drumming. Students build confidence, self-expression and learning lifelong physical literacy skills using DrumFIT streaming videos.
Bonus: A new office sign was installed at Masonic Heights this week. Thank you Agio Imaging for taking their ideas and designing the perfect sign to welcome all who walk through their doors!

Mr. Cesarone has worked with Lake Shore’s CTE programs for over fifteen years, and has been a valuable resource. Most recently he has assisted our students with the development and marketing of a web-based portal for our school store. He is always patient with the students and their inquiries, both in person and in video / phone conferences and will remotely access our system to demonstrate concepts for the students. He models professional communications for the students and has made valuable contributions to our Marketing, Finance, and other CTE programs at Lake Shore. He also works seamlessly with our internal tech advisors.
“The activities planned in CTE classes illustrate the rigor and relevance CTE courses offer our students,” said MCTEAA member Todd Stevens, CTE representative of Lake Shore High School. “By partnering with the business community, CTE programs are investing in students and providing them with the latest technology and skills that will prepare them to become successful employees and future leaders.”
CTE is a major part of the solution to myriad national economic and workforce problems, such as high school dropout rates, a weakened economy, global competitiveness and massive layoffs. At a time when opportunity for employment is so critical, CTE programs in every community are ensuring students are equipped with the skills to successfully enter the workforce.
Love
February is considered the month of love and a perfect time to spotlight on Lake Shore High School Class of 2015 graduates and high school sweethearts Robert Martin and Grace Bommarito.
When you enroll at Lake Shore Public Schools, you not only join a prestigious school, but also become part of a family. And when you graduate, your experiences create the launching pad for a successful career. Periodically, we spotlight on our graduates, sharing their accomplishments because we are loud and proud of them. We were fortunate to catch up with Robert and here's what he shared with us:
"High school for me meant a time to hone my skills for higher education, though for what I was uncertain for the entire duration of high school. I was passionate about my studies and attended both LSHS and the Macomb Mathematics Science and Technology Center (MMSTC) for high school. I worked very hard and graduated salutatorian of the 2015 class. From there I attended WSU for undergrad. It was during sophomore of undergrad when I discovered I was drawn towards medicine, so I began my pre-med studies, in addition to my major in psychology. At that time it was my intention to pursue a career as a psychiatrist. I graduated with a bachelor's in 2019 and was accepted at WSU's medical school in 2020. In 2021 I proposed to my now wife Grace Bommarito and was married in 2022.
Most of the students in our graduating class and the faculty at LSHS will recognize her name, as she was very active in choir, cross country, and track throughout high school. We met all the way back at Kennedy Middle School, but really only became good friends during the last two years of high school and started dating shortly after graduation. She has been a huge support system for me during my medical school journey, just as I supported her while she went through nursing school. I am currently applying (and interviewing) for a residency training spot in Family Medicine. I am due to graduate from medical school in June 2024."
Lake Shore recognizes alumni who bring honor to our school district through work in their career or community. Nominate a graduate to be recognized for significant professional/personal achievements, discoveries, or creative work and exhibiting our core values by sending us an email at social@lsps.org.
Bonus: Can you spell L-O-V-E? While red symbolizes love and joy, we celebrate Rodgers Elementary's Spelling Bee with these color meanings; Rockets spelled a total of 212 words in 17 rounds. Congratulations to winner Loretta Beafore and runner-up Mia Koslakiewicz. We love our spelling whizzes!
Perhaps our favorite moment of the bee was observing Loretta's little sister Mackenzie, a 2nd grader, cheer from outside the cafeteria window. She watched from that window, eyes tightly fixed to Loretta's every letter, for an entire hour, giving Loretta the support she needed to take the W.
Congratulations to Fatme Ghandour who will be representing Kennedy Middle School at the county regional spelling bee as well!
In an email to his colleagues, Mr. Chesser wrote, "She is MORE than capable of winning - your job for the next month is to boost her confidence, so she believes she is more than capable of winning."
