ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAM
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS
The Elementary students were able to build upon their apple unit with Mrs. Mason, with a wonderful field trip. We were excited to take our FIRST POST COVID field trip to All Seasons Orchard, right here in Woodstock. Students took a wagon ride into the orchard, were able to pick apples right off of the tree, feed and love on adorable barnyard animals, bounce on the bounce pit and even race Ms. Davis and Ms. Dolumba on the racing bikes. The very fun day was polished off with lunch on the farm and an apple cider donut. It felt great to get back to normal and have a good old field trip. Mrs. Mason’s class has just finished a unit on apples, their life cycles, and fun facts. The next unit is “BATS”.
Next up in the Elementary wing will be our Halloween Literacy celebration. The link to the details and common questions can be found here.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WELLNESS
Mr. Mohr, Physical Education Teacher
The Elementary students picked up right where they left off from the previous year. We had a few first time riders learn without training wheels! October is Flag Football and in November will be Basketball. Our fitness days will typically be Tuesdays and Thursdays either in the gym or outside (weather permitting), so please dress your student appropriately as the seasons change.
MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM
MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS
The middle school students have started their science fair projects! This year they will be working in pairs or groups of 3. Each group will have to work together to make decisions and complete the project. Be on the lookout for a supply list from your student in the next few weeks!
Math and Reading are both chugging along as expected. Students are engaged in both whole group and individual skills lessons. The students are all participating in the district provided curriculums including: Go Math, Discovery Math, ReadyGen, and Collections.
We can’t believe the holiday season is already upon us. Throughout the next few months the students will participate in a variety of math, reading, social, and fun activities related to any of the upcoming holidays.
MIDDLE SCHOOL WELLNESS
Mr. Mickey and Mr. Mohr, Physical Education Teachers
The Middle School students enjoyed the bike unit again this year and we even had a few first time riders learn the basics of riding a bike! October is Flag Football and in November will be Basketball. Our fitness days will typically be Tuesdays and Thursdays either in the gym or outside (weather permitting), so please dress your student appropriately as the seasons change.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS
World History: We just finished up an exciting unit on ancient Greece. We learned about the many Greek gods and goddesses and how the Greeks worshiped them for the different attributes. We also examined Greek dramas including the Iliad and Odyssey. Homer was a fun and creative writer. Some of the themes still apply to the world today such as friendship, determination, and consequences for actions.
Algebra: We are moving the x to the other side. Sometimes they are both on the same side and we need to figure out how to divide or subtract like variables.
Geometry: Be sure to ask your Geoscience student about plate tectonics and Pangea. The students are very interested in how the plates move, forming mountains, volcanoes and causing earthquakes.
Health: We are learning about how nutrition and physical performance are linked. We look forward to devouring the myplate.gov page in an attempt to understand nutritional value and combat hunger.
English: The students are continuing to read Teens Guide to World Domination as well as Butter. We continue to identify different villains in our lives and relating them to the story. We are also touching on larger topics such as depression, disorders, and toxic relationships.
Life Skills: Just completed a unit on digital literacy and learning how to verify digital information accuracy. We will be starting a new unit on cryptocurrency.
Pre-Vocational: We just finished communication skills. We are now looking at how negative interactions affect job performance.
HIGH SCHOOL WELLNESS
Mr. Tschappat, Physical Education and Health Teacher
We are deep in the endzone of a flag football unit. The students are working hard on the x’s and o’s of the game as we lead up to the Clay Academy Super Bowl. Hopefully our high school heroes can beat the middle schoolers.MIND AND WHOLE BODY WELLNESS
School Counselor and Social Worker Update
Clay Academy celebrates Red Ribbon Week: October 24 - October 28 , 2022
The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to promote a healthy drug-free lifestyle in our community. The color Red and the Red Ribbon have been a symbol of this national campaign since it officially began in 1988. The Red Ribbon is a symbol of support for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique (KiKi) Camarena. Agent Camarena was killed in 1985 while trying to stop drug traffickers in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 1988, the U.S. Congress proclaimed the first Red Ribbon Week in support of Agent Camarena and the cause he gave his life for…combating drugs.
Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their healthy drug-free pledge by:
Signing drug-free pledges, participating in various school activities throughout the week and dressing in themed attire to show their drug-free support. The classrooms with the most participation for the week on each grade level earned a pizza lunch.
Thank you for helping us create a healthy, drug-free future for the students at Clay Academy!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at (815) 337-2529.
