Swimmers on the Storm
Swimmer of the Month: Brett Baker
Brett not only is a great swimmer but he reached a lifetime goal of climbing to the summit of Mt. Ranier this summer. It took four attempts. His first climb was several years ago and he had to turn back due to weather. The following year he climbed with his daughter, but it was not a summit attempt. This year he was determined to summit but on the initial attempt Mother Nature had other ideas. Fortunately for Brett, a spot had opened up for an attempt the following week and he went for it. The 4th trip up the mountain was the charm…he finally made the summit! 14,000 feet in 3 days!
Brett incorporates multiple disciplines into his training. To build his strength he walks miles and miles though his hilly neighborhood carrying his weighted down pack (up to 50 lbs). On the weekends he will take his pack and hike the trails at Parris Mountain, Table Rock, or Caesar’s Head. Interspersed with this regiment Brett will cycle or run to increase speed and agility (and now he’s added swimming).
Brett began swimming initially as a favor to Meg Hudak. He agreed to be a kayaker for the Swim Around Key West, but knew he was not a strong swimmer (actually, he wasn’t a swimmer at all) So he decided to improve for safety sake. He started out by building his endurance to swim one lap without stopping at his community pool. Then he worked his way up to multiple laps. He came to Greenville Splash about a year ago and his improvement has been remarkable! Brett is dedicated and comes to workouts every week to practice technique and build stamina in the pool. He is an inspiration to his coaches and other swimmers.
As a result of his new found swimming skills, Brett also challenged himself to attempt not one…but two sprint triathlons this year. Brett has competed in several running events this year including the Bridge Run in Charleston (10k), Georgia Regents University 10k in Augusta and and the Spinx Run Fest 10k.
