THE COMMUNICATION FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES
A NEW SEMESTER BEGINS
REPORT CARDS
HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE
SAVE THE DATE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2024.
This year, our second semester, Back To School Night, will have a different flavor than in previous years. On February 15, 2024, we will host an open house-style event that will provide families a chance to visit teachers and gain exposure to all the courses and content coverage available in each department. The course selection window closes on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Students and Parents/Guardians should attend! This new approach allows families with multiple children at the high school to visit simultaneously.
The night will include opportunities to speak with guidance counselors and visit with representatives from the EASTERN Center. The event will allow families to meet with teachers in a department-style setting while being exposed to the content options available.
SEMESTER 2 - OPEN HOUSE

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history. We are looking forward to our Black History Month Concert featuring special guest Michelle Johnson, who was commissioned to work with our choirs during the month of February. Thanks to the Hatboro-Horsham Education Foundation who helped make this a reality.

ATTENDANCE - REMINDER
Being on time for school is critical for student success. Students who are on time have time to mentally get settled and prepared for their day and get the benefit of all the content of their first-period class. The first period BEGINS at 7:30 am. This means that students must be in the classroom at that time. The bell rings at 7:20, 7:25, and 7:28, giving them 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and a warning bell at 2 minutes to get to first-period class. Arriving at the building at 7:30 am means a student is tardy. Students who have 3 unexcused tardies to school will be issued a final warning, and email communication will be sent home. The 4th unexcused tardy and beyond will result in further consequences for EACH unexcused tardy accumulated. Thank you for being so helpful as we work to provide a smooth start to our day for teachers and students.
COURSE SELECTION PERIOD
Grades 9-11 Course Selection for 2024-2025 School Year
Course selection is a critical step in the academic planning process. Hatboro-Horsham HS believes that accepting responsibility for decisions is an integral part of the educational and learning process. Course selection should be completed thoughtfully and carefully after realistic self-evaluation and considerable dialogue with teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians. We hope that in streamlining this guide, your child will be able to make informed course selection decisions based on career paths and interests.
This past Thursday (February 1) we had a building wide Curriculum Crawl. It was an opportunity for students in grades 9-11 to see all of the courses available at the high school, as we begin the course selection window.
Families can find the course selection guide here - https://www.hatboro-horsham.org/Page/768
COURSE SELECTION TIMELINE
I. Students will complete course selection between February 5 – February 21. Students will utilize the ClassChoice program to complete their selections. An email with more information will be sent to students.
II. Each student will have an individual meeting with their counselor regarding their course selections. Information for counselor meetings will be emailed to students in February. If the selections have been carefully made, changes should not be necessary, except in unusual situations. If a student wishes to request a change, they must meet with the school counselor before the deadline for changes to course selections - that date is March 22, 2024. Students should make selections in the Feb 5-21 window.
Student choices will be made available for families to view through PowerSchool. Families will receive an email alert in March that provides access. We cannot stress enough the importance of carefully considering and selecting courses during this time. The ability to drop and replace courses after April 2024 is extremely limited.
Save the date for two great events in March! Students and families can learn more about post-secondary education, employment options, and ways to strengthen their resume and skill sets. Mark your calendar!
Additionally, if you know any businesses or service organizations looking to connect with high school students for employment or volunteer opportunities, please reach out to Meghann Townsend at mtownsen@hhsd.org.
EASTERN CENTER FAMILY OPEN HOUSE

The Open House also offers an opportunity to hear from EASTERN instructors on the business environment that complements students’ high school academics. Many special activities in EASTERN’s career programs are scheduled, and there will college, industry, and military representatives on hand.
