Shorewood Hills Shark Tooth
December 1st, 2023
We will develop a welcoming school community of global citizens through: Anti-racist practices, strong relationships, and high academic expectations.
I want to send a big thank you to the PTO, especially Board Member Daniel Momont, for organizing the Shorewood t-shirt give-a-way. This project serves as an opportunity to cultivate a strong sense of school spirit and belonging within the school community.
Also, now that winter is here, please be sure to send the appropriate winter gear with students. Here are our guidelines:
- 30-39 degrees: Jacket, boots, hat, gloves/mittens
- Below 30 degrees: All winter gear
To note, students will stay inside if the wind chill is -10 degrees or below.
In partnership,
Anne Gillespie
Principal
4K and Kindergarten Turnaround
We need everyone to STOP, DROP, and GO at drop-off time! This is especially true for our 4K and Kindergarten turnaround.
Please do not park and leave your car or park and idle. This causes traffic backups and prevents cars in the back from being able to leave.
The Shorewood Police were also out the morning watching for cars that have pulled over on the side of the street. They will ticket you for this!
The best advice I can give is:
1. Give yourself plenty of time in the morning.
2. Find a street parking spot.
3. Park your car.
4. Walk your student to the door.
Thank you for your cooperation!
From the PTO: Seeking Wine Bottle Donations
The PTO is seeking donations of wine bottles for our annual staff "wine pull." This is kind of like a raffle but everyone who participates gets a random bottle of wine (or non-alcoholic alternatives such as sparking cider). This was one of our most loved staff events last year and is such a lovely way to bring some joy right before winter break.
Bottle donations can be brought into the main office at school up until Monday, December 18th.
Thank you!
Reminder: After-School Spanish Classes Pause for Winter Break
Wednesday, Dec. 6th is the last After School Spanish class before the winter break. Classes resume February 7th.
Read-At-Home Tips
Fluency
MMSD elementary schools are in our second year of using a phonics-based approach to teaching reading called the science of reading. There are many things you can do with your student(s) at home to support this approach to reading, as well. Over the next few months, I will share some tips you can use. This week is fluency.
Fluency is the ability to read with sufficient speed, accuracy, one, and phrasing to support understanding. This includes:
- Automatic word recognition
- Accurate word recognition
- Use of expression
K-1 Fluency Tips:
π² Point our punctuation marks that aid in expression such as question marks, exclamation points, and quotation marks. Demonstrate how your voice changes as you read for each. Only focus on one during a book. remember it is important to enjoy it first and foremost.
π² Encourage your child to sing favorite sons and repeat favorite lines of songs.
2-3 Fluency Tips:
π² Use different voices: When reading a familiar story or passage, try having your child use different voices. Read the story in a mouse voice, cowboy voice or a princess voice.
π²After your child has practiced a passage, have them record it with a phone or computer. Once recorded, your child can listen to their reading and follow along in the book. Ofter they will want to record it again and make it even better!
