Dear School Community,

I feel truly fortunate to serve Spring Hill ISD, a district with an amazing community of students, parents and staff members. We have recently had the opportunity to recognize the significant contributions and achievements of several of our SHISD employee groups.

National School Counseling Week was celebrated February 6-10. We at Spring Hill are grateful to our counselors for the important work they do to support our students and help them academically and socially achieve their best.

February 22 marked School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Our team of bus drivers ensures the safe transport of our students to and from school each day, as well as to and from extracurricular activities. We appreciate our bus drivers and are proud to recognize their daily commitment to our school.

Next week we will salute the work of our maintenance team during Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day on March 3. We are so thankful for our maintenance staff and the work they do behind the scenes to keep our district running safely and efficiently.

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month!

Spring Hill High School offers a variety of CTE Programs of Study to provide students the opportunity to gain the academic, technical, and employability skills necessary for true career readiness. CTE Programs of Study available at Spring Hill include Accounting & Financial Services, Culinary Arts, Digital Communications, Healthcare Diagnostics, and Welding.

“Career and Technical Education provides students with career exploration opportunities that enable them to make informed decisions about their academic coursework and pursue established Programs of Study and career pathways,” said Adrian Knight, Assistant Superintendent of Career and College Readiness.

Ninety-one percent of Spring Hill High School students are currently enrolled in at least one CTE course, and this school year students have earned 230 industry-based certifications.

Spring Hill Primary, Intermediate and Junior High students recently participated in University Interscholastic League (UIL) A+ Academics competitions, with the Spring Hill Primary & Intermediate team winning first place in district at the meet for grades 2-5, and the Spring Hill Junior High team finishing with first place honors at the district meet for grades 6-8.

“I am so proud of these hard-working students,” Spring Hill UIL Coordinator Janna Graham said. “They practice weekly with their coaches and study individually on their own time to prepare for competition.”

The UIL A+ Academics district that Spring Hill competes in includes Carthage, Center, Chapel Hill, Gilmer, Henderson, and Kilgore.

UIL A+ Academics includes 20 different events for students in grades 2-8. These events are designed to complement and expand upon what students learn in the classroom, both through learning specific subject knowledge, and through learning skills that are valuable in many disciplines.

Three P.E. teachers from Spring Hill Intermediate will be setting up camp to spend the night on the school roof Tuesday, February 28. The rooftop campout is a student reward for exceeding the school’s American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge fundraising goal.

“Spring Hill Intermediate students exceeded our expectations and raised more than $10,000 to support the mission of the American Heart Association,” said Intermediate teacher Chris Peurifoy. “We’re excited to celebrate that amazing achievement in a fun way by camping on the roof.”

The campout will be livestreamed, and students are encouraged to drive by to see and wave at teachers Chris Peurifoy, Will Stewart, and Russell Gray Tuesday evening.

During this community service project, students raise money for the American Heart Association while learning how to develop heart-healthy habits like being physically active.

“We learn about our heart, body, exercising, and eating healthier,” said Intermediate teacher Chris Peurifoy. “I challenge each of the students to talk to people about what we are doing and learning in P.E. class.”

Other student rewards for their fundraising efforts include a chance to throw pies at the teachers, and the top producers will get the opportunity to serve as Coach for a Day.

Students enrolled in Spring Hill High School’s welding program recently began using the MobileArc Augmented Reality Welding System, an easy to use welding simulation tool designed to engage students through a hands-on augmented reality experience.

By using the MobileArc, students can practice multiple welding processes in a realistic simulator that generates three-dimensional images of metal workpieces. Students are scored and provided immediate feedback regarding their performance to help correct errors and reinforce proper welding practices.

The simulator will complement traditional instruction by providing student welders with the repetition needed to grow and refine their skills. “The welding simulator will help students learn proper techniques and establish muscle memory to help build their skills and their confidence,” said Spring Hill Welding Instructor Corey Wright.

The Texas 2021-22 School Report Card (SRC) is available through the TEA website here. The purpose of the SRC is to inform parents about school performance and characteristics. Paper copies of the SRC are located in the campus office. If you have any questions, please contact the campus principal.

In an effort to strengthen economic development efforts, The Longview Economic Development Corporation (LEDCO) has recently engaged Boyette Strategic Advisors to develop Advance Longview, a five-year Economic Development Strategic Plan. Advance Longview will help guide their strategic efforts.
