A message from the Principal
Before any construction work starts, the District hires an environmental consultant to test materials that will be impacted during construction for asbestos and lead. This data is provided to the contractors so that they can hire appropriate contractors to remove the identified materials according to applicable regulations. The District’s environmental consultant is also engaged to provide oversight during the removal to assure compliance.
The procedure for removal involves creating a containment to assure no hazardous materials are released. This is done with plastic sheeting to seal up the space. The contained area is put under negative pressure using air scrubbers with HEPA filters that draw air out of the containment and blow it outside. The negative pressure means any gap or crack in the containment is pulling air into the space from the outside that is then filtered and blown outside. This assures nothing is released outside the containment.
The environmental consultant inspects the containment before any work starts. They perform air monitoring outside the containment to confirm nothing leaks. Once the removal work is complete, the environmental consultant samples the air inside the containment to assure nothing was left behind before the containment can be removed.
All these steps assure there is no exposure to anyone while the removal work is
ongoing and that the area is free of the hazardous materials disturbed by the
construction when the removal is complete. If you have any specific questions please contact the Principal.
