Let's Talk Tuesdays
BASD - Home of the Bears
Tuesday, November 28, 2023
ATTENTION: BES, GES, NHUF, and WES FAMILIES:
We are currently looking for help serving breakfast for approximately 30 minutes each morning at your child’s elementary school. We need two people each day at each building, Monday through Friday, from 8:15 to 8:45 AM. We are looking for people willing to donate their time, as these are unpaid positions.
The primary responsibilities are to provide students with their breakfast options for the day and to hand them their selection as they proceed along the food service line.
The same two people do not need to help every day. If multiple people are interested, we can create a schedule that works for all those willing to help.
As parents/guardians of students in the building, you can bring your child with you as parent drop-off for your 8:15 AM start – earlier than the normal drop-off time. The child(ren) will sit just outside the kitchen as you begin service. They will be permitted to head to their classroom(s) at 8:25 AM. While in the cafeteria, they will remain your responsibility and will be expected to sit in the designated location while adhering to school rules.
There is a PowerPoint training session that needs to be completed before helping. It is possible to do so from home. BASD will share the link once we have confirmed interest.
For now, these helpers will be visitors as they would not have unsupervised direct contact with students. Once our breakfast helper program is up and running, we will review the need for volunteer clearance paperwork. This requirement is subject to change once the process is up and running and any unanticipated need for clearances arises.
If you are interested, please complete this Google form. https://forms.gle/j8jyTZ7hd1vaYLt1A
We appreciate your consideration.

State Rep Welcomes BASH Senior Intern to Harrisburg
Submitted by Mr. Rothermel, YAG Advisor on Behalf of the YAG Advisory Team
PA State Representative Donna Scheuren of the 147th District recently hosted her intern, Gabriela Martin, a BASH senior, in Harrisburg. Gaby has been in Youth and Government since 8th grade. She rode out the CoViD years and stuck with us when YAG went virtual. She was recognized as a Conference of National Affairs delegate and led the high school charge by helping it rebound toward pre-CoViD roster numbers. Her advisors are so happy and proud to see her take advantage of this opportunity in the state legislature as she prepares for her post-Boyertown years. She has been an exceptional leader in Boyertown, and the world will benefit as she expands those she reaches in the future. Congrats Gaby!
#BASHBEARInternshipProgram Gaby, we are so proud of you!
"We are lucky for Gaby’s leadership for our hybrid YMCA/HS program. She has been a great asset to the program and a major part of the programs successful resurgence." ~ Alicia Dinnell,
Executive Director Boyertown & Pottstown Branch

BASD Alum and Artist Visits BES for Special Project
Submitted by Meena Larkin, Communications Intern, and Mrs. Wagner, BES Art Teacher
Mrs. Wagner, BASD art teacher, recently reached out to share a story about Amy Stephen. Amy graduated from BASH as a member of the Class of 2001 and credits Mrs. Wagner as her inspiration. Throughout November, Ms. Amy, as she refers to herself, has worked with BES students in grades 1 - 5, painting a mural for their school lobby.
Ms. Stephen has been working as an artist for many years and has over 15 years of experience as a mural artist in Philadelphia. She is also a certified art teacher and teaches art classes at the Michener Art Museum and Engage Art Studio. Ms. Stephen has designed a fun and colorful kite and sky theme to brighten the BES lobby area.
During a recent conversation with Meena, she shared that her motivation for the BES kite design came in part from the mural’s placement, which will be placed above a showcase in the lobby. Each kite will be different to represent the individual students and their creativity. She is excited to encourage other young artists - particularly in public art.
Thank you for returning to BASD and having an IMPACT on our students! The display is scheduled to be installed as early as winter break. #BESBEARCreativity

CES 5th Graders Study Order of Operations by Operating on Zoo Animals
Submitted by Meena Larkin, Communications Intern
"I think this was my favorite school visit so far. I got to work with the students and help them learn. It was a great experience!" ~ Meena upon her return from her visit to Miss Shutt's classroom.
Recently, students in Miss Shutt's 5th grade class at CES transformed their classroom into a veterinarian's clinic at a local zoo. They put on their white coats, stethoscopes, and safety gloves and saved sick (paper) animals throughout the zoo. Each animal was marked with multiple 'order of operations' equations across multiple body parts. Students were tasked with completing the equations to save the animal's life. A 'chief medical examiner' was assigned to each group. They were responsible for checking the medical team's work before moving on to the next animal.

7th Grade Students Create Shrinky Dinks as a Learning Tool
Submitted by Mrs. Grabner, MSW Math Teacher
“I think this was my favorite school visit so far. I got to work with the students and help them learn. It was a great experience!” ~ Meena, upon her return from her visit to Miss Shutt’s classroom.
My math classes and Chris Vassallo’s 7th-grade math class recently worked on Scale Factor in our Proportions Unit. We designed and created shrinky dinks and then compared our measurements before and after the shrinking to see if our shrinky dinks shrunk to 1/3 of the original size, as stated by the manufacturer. Students created their design, measured its length and width before shrinking, and then re-measured it after shrinking. We calculated the scale factor and also got to take home earrings, keychains, or small tokens. Students will re-visit our data when we study the percent of change in our Percents Unit before winter break.

CPR Class - Learning through Real Life Scenarios
Submitted by Ms. Sirianni, BASH HPE Teacher
In CPR class, BASH students have been learning about types of wounds, wound care, and special situations. To wrap up the unit, students were given the chance to put those skills to use in pretend wound care scenarios. They worked with a partner and visited different stations around the room. They read a scenario and tried to administer first aid with the materials provided at that station. They were given a sheet to record their steps and had to decide if they need to call 911.

BES Food Drive and Pumpkin Contest for Preston's Pantry
Submitted by Mrs. Kaufmann, BES 3rd Grade Teacher
BES shows our generosity in many ways!
BES Food Drive for Preston’s Pantry:
This year BES decided to hold a food drive during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Our 5th grade Student Advisory Team (SAT) was very involved with this event. Not only did our SAT members design posters to advertise for the event, but they also created a google slide presentation about our food drive and presented in every classroom Kindergarten through 5th grade. SAT members stayed in from recess all week to collect, organize and count food items that were donated in each classroom around the building. BES decided to hold a friendly competition with the food drive by awarding the class that collects the most food items with an extra recess. Mrs. Kaufmann’s 3rd grade class collected the most food items having a grand total of 374 food items! Our building total was 2,235 food items!
Pumpkin Contest:
At the end of October, the students and staff raised over $330 for Boyertown Multi-Services! The BES staff used their imaginations to create some very cool pumpkins. The BES community voted for their favorite pumpkin by bringing in money. We were blown away with the amount of generosity! All money was given to Preston’s Pantry to support their initiative.
We were all so touched and proud of our students’ commitment and dedication towards this meaningful cause that supports our very own community of Boyertown.

Attention: All 8th Grade Students - 2023-2024 Writing Contest
The Boyertown Bulletin is sponsoring a writing contest for all eighth graders. We ask that you share this information with your eighth graders and encourage them to enter this contest. Their ELA teacher will have this information as well.
2023 Writing Contest rules:
1. The contest began on October 23, 2023, with the deadline for submission on January 8, 2024. We want to present certificates and prizes to the winning students in late February or early March at a date agreeable to both the judges and the school. Last year, the judges went to the schools and personally announced the winners and gave them a certificate of achievement plus their prizes.
2. This contest is open to all eighth-grade students in The Boyertown Area School District. (Eighth-grade Oley Valley School District students will also participate in this contest. Each School (Oley Valley Middle School, Boyertown East, and Boyertown West) will be judged individually.)
3. The written stories are to be the sole work of the student and may be on any topic they desire.
4. Stories should not exceed 500-600 words.
5. Stories will only be judged on the content of the story. The judges will not judge grammar, spelling, or punctuation. However, at their discretion, the judges may consider grammar, spelling, and punctuation in the event of a tie.
6. We will not accept stories that are not appropriate, such as stories containing vulgarity or explicit sexuality.
7. Stories should be submitted to the student’s ELA teacher, who will send them to me to forward to the judges. Please submit stories as a Word Document. We prefer stories not to be submitted in PDF because they must be copied and sent to the other judges.
8. The Boyertown Bulletin requests written permission from the parent(s) or guardian(s) of each student who is entering the contest. Permission will be for the student’s name (first and last), photo, and story to be published in a future edition of The Boyertown Bulletin. A permission form is attached to this email. The permission form should be submitted directly to me at patmoser102@gmail.com. Please do not submit the permission form to the school.
If you have any questions about the contest or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you,
