December
Happy December Everyone!
Yikes, where has the year gone! It's so hard to believe that we are almost at the end of our first semester of school. I have loved spending time in classrooms with your kids, getting to interact with them and cannot wait to continue working with them during the second semester.
We will be completing our mid-year benchmark assessments in reading and math by taking the iReady assessment. After your student completes this assessment, we will be able to see who is already making a year's growth, who is on track to making a year or more of growth, and who may need some additional support with making that growth. We will send home parent reports on December 15th with your student.
As the weather continues to be wet and icy periodically, we ask that you look closely at the ground while walking your child to and from class. We work hard to make sure that we are spreading ice melt, shoveling, plowing, and spreading sand as much as necessary, but we want to make sure everyone is safe.
It is so important for our students to be at school each day, unless they are sick. There is a high connection to student achievement and school attendance. Students who had lower rates of absences (were absent less), made more academic growth when compared to students who had higher rates of absences (were absent more).
Here are our attendance rates so far this year. As you can see, it has gradually gone down each month. Our hope is that during the second semester, we will go up each month!
- August - 93.61%
- September - 92.13%
- October - 91.84%
- November - 90.57%
We appreciate those of you who are having kids stay home if they have symptoms of illness, but if there is no illness, please make coming to school a priority. We are happy to support you with any barriers that you may be experiencing, so please reach out if there is anything we can do to help.
As always, thank you for sharing your children with us. It is such a privilege to get to work with them every day!

Cooler Weather is Here!
We will be moving into our cold weather season. Please make sure that your children are wearing coats, and possibly hats and gloves to school on those cold days. When the snow begins to stick to the ground, we also recommend students have boots for recess or to stay on the blacktop. We do not typically have students change their clothes if they are wet if they have chosen to roll in the snow without the proper gear to keep them dry. Please let our school know if there is a way that we can help with cold-weather gear. One final request would be to make sure that your child's gear has their name labeled on it so that we can return any lost items to the correct owner, and so that you do not have to buy any replacement gear!
Do you want to get involved? Have you heard of DAAC? The District Advisory & Accountability Committee (DAAC) offers families, students, staff and community members the opportunity to become involved with the improvement of the educational system. DAAC submits recommendations for the district unified improvement plan (DUIP) and monitors progress, reviews charter applications, makes recommendations to the school board to consider for budget purposes, and supports family engagement in district committees and in schools.
Annually, the Board approves the DAAC membership roster. To the extent practicable, the school board must ensure that the stakeholders appointed reflect the student populations significantly represented within the district. This is why we are extending our DAAC membership timeline. We have representation from 17 of our district schools, but would like to see ALL schools represented.
DAAC meets once a month, August through April. Our meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:00-7:30 pm, in-person with a virtual option. Anyone can attend a DAAC meeting, but we do have voting members. Voting members are urged to participate regularly to ensure a quorum on important DAAC actions.
If you are interested in joining DAAC please email laura.copeland@tsd.org and she will send you more information. Thank you!
