Message from the Principal
Oh what fun Fall Festival was! Thank you to the PTO Fall Festival Committee for creating such a fun event for our school community. Be sure to check out our social media account for pictures. Also, the committee is seeking your feedback below.
This Tuesday, our school will be participating in a lockdown drill. This is one of two lockdown drills required by the district throughout the year. As a reminder, we follow Standard Response Protocol from ILoveYouGuys.org. For students this protocol provides continuity of expectations and actions throughout their educational career. During a lockdown drill, students and staff practice locks, lights out of sight. Below is are the specific actions teachers and students will take. Please talk with your students about the lockdown, and about the importance of following the directions of the adults during emergency drills.
Coming up next Saturday, November 4, is our Fall Clean-Up! We are hoping for clear skies, but whatever the weather, we will out cleaning up our beds and planting for the spring. Families are welcome to come help as you are able. Sign-ups, and more specific information below.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Happy Friday,
Sherry Marsh, Ed.D.
Principal

Findley Flyers
FINDLEY FLYERS
Findley Flyers is a walking/running club that encourages kids to exercise with their friends at recess or after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Greeting Findley Families,
Thank you so much to the amazing volunteers who have helped the Findley Flyers this year! We have had tremendous turn out from the students and your support is helping to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Volunteers needed - Thank you to those that stayed this Tuesday to help cover for 2nd & 3rd grade. Please pass along to all of your friends that we are always in need of more volunteers - particularly at this age group right now. It is very unfortunate but if we can't get enough people to cover the volunteer time slots, these grades won't get to run. We are not able to cover this safely with just 2 volunteers. Also, if someone wants to come out and help even though the volunteer slots are full, that is totally fine.
More Volunteers needed for Thursday afterschool
Please pass along to all of your friends that we are always in need of more volunteers especially when we are doing Findley Flyers in an undercover area if it's raining.
Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you again for all of your help!

Fall Beautification-Nov. 4th
Findley Fall Planting & Clean up
Funded by 718 Cub Scouts and Findley PTO
Cub Scout’s Pack 718 will be running the Findley Fall cleanup on Nov 4th, 2023 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We will rake leaves and do a little planting too.
Last year Findley students and the scouts helped plant over 400 tulip bulbs and during spring the school was vibrating with amazing, beautiful colors. This was possible due to the effort of the community who came out to plant them in the fall. It would be amazing if we could plant even more flowers and rake the leaves to make the school look better this year.
Please consider supporting this effort again and sign up here.
Bulbs, Soil, Snacks will be provided.
Please bring gloves, raking tools, digging/planting tools.
Findley Fall Cleanup is open to the community, so feel free to invite friends.
We will be there having fun, rain or shine.

Author Visits-Nov. 14 & Nov. 16
Coming soon to Findley! The PTO is sponsoring two author visits. One for students in Grades K-2 and one for students in 3-5.
If you would like to order a book from the featured authors, here is the book ordering info:
K-2 Author Visit 11/16:
Book Order Link for Author Zoey Abbott
3-5 Author Visit 11/14:
Author Visit Book Order Link for Aron Nels Steinke Mr. Wolf Books
Be sure to fill-in your shipping address even though the books will be hand delivered to Findley. This step is necessary for the order to process. Also, at checkout select Findley under "Calculate Shipping Cost". This will ensure books are delivered to Findley.
All books ordered through this order link will be signed by the authors, but not personalized. Write your child's teacher's name in the comment box so that the books can be distributed easily.
Every order received successfully will receive an email confirmation with an order number.
The deadline for submitting orders is Thursday, November 2 2023. This will allow us enough time to get the books ordered, signed, and organized in time for our school presentations. The authors will bring the signed book orders with them on the day of the visit for distribution.
TAG Updates
In mid-November, K-2 students in Beaverton may be nominated for the COGAT test. This test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies, and figure matrices.
Currently, the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for TAG in the area of intellectual ability. If you feel you want your child tested, please discuss this with your teacher and fill out this parent form: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15-LNUiYXZq33VUbu0W9pUys2SUvo_w5K/view?usp=share_link
These will be due on Monday, November 13th at the end of the day.
There will be no ITBS testing this year. Students in 3-5th will be taking the OSAS in the spring and these scores will possibly be looked at for TAG identification. These details about identification through OSAS are currently being worked on and we will let you know as soon as we find out.
For more information about testing, please see our Findley TAG webpage and then contact Shannon Bauck and/or Kari Ray.

A Message from our School Social Worker & Counselor
Dear Findley Families/Caretakers,
We hope the new school year if off to a great start for your student(s)!
This school year Ms. V and Mrs. Gotfried will be working together to support regular attendance. We wanted to share the districts message around attendance and also share with you our school protocol around attendance. You can also find this information in the Findley Family Handbook. Please reach out to Mrs. Gotfried or Ms. V with any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much!
From the Beaverton School District Website:
In BSD, we believe that attendance is an important life skill that helps students be successful in the classroom, graduate on time and be prepared for life beyond high school. The desire to attend school regularly starts with students feeling a sense of belonging. We want our classrooms, schools and district to be places where students develop meaningful relationships with staff and other students. But to forge those connections, students need to show up for school.
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school days for any reason (including excused, unexcused and behavioral absences). That's equivalent to about 18 missed days over the course of an academic year. In Oregon, more than one in six children are chronically absent from school. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade. By 6th grade, absenteeism is one sign that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
At Findley, our goal is to support families in regular attendance by problem solving and supporting families when needed to help overcome any obstacles or barriers to attendance.
Our school social worker and school counselor monitor attendance and respond with a tiered approach for 10% missed days, or below 90% attendance:
1. 10% or more missed school days: Teacher Outreach
2. Continued absences that fall below 90% attendance rate: Counselor or Social Worker Outreach
3. Continued absences after initial outreach: 2nd email or phone call from Counselor or Social worker
4. Continued support/problem solving needed to improve attendance: Administration Outreach
Change of Go Home Plans?
If you are changing how your student is going home, please make sure you contact the office. You may email fndly-communications@beaverton.k12.or.us or phone 503.356.2100.
Notifying the office allows them to know exactly where your student should be and helps us keep them safe!
Thank you for your help!
