Davison swimmer ends season, tying her school record, in state finals
One swimmer from the Davison Girls Swim and Dive team competed Friday, November 17, at Eastern Michigan for the MHSAA Division 1 State Meet. Junior, Lucy Stevens, qualified for the 50 freestyle event with a time of 25.11 (25.29 is the D1 cut). She went into the meet in 26th place. She finished second in her heat and ended the season 24th in the D1 for the 50 free. She matched her time exactly with another 25.11, this is also the school record she holds.
Diver Isla Puzjak (also a junior) qualified as an alternate, but no one dropped out so she did not dive.
Congratulations ladies on a great season! Above, Isla (left) and Lucy.
New Wrestling Coach ready for the season
We are excited to welcome Coach Drew Dixon to the wrestling program!! He will be partnering up with Davison Wrestling Alum and Coach, Thomas Garty to lead the program moving forward. Together, they are working to build a great coaching staff that will lead us into the future and continue the Davison Cardinal success that we are accustomed to here in Cardinal Country.
Drew is looking forward to helping the Cardinals continue the successes they have had in the past and understands the culture of Davison Wrestling and the work ethic and commitment needed to continue that.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to take on the position," he said. "I look forward to collaborating with the coaching staff and to help lead this program as we look to continue to build and strengthen the already solid Davison Wrestling culture. I also look forward to building positive relationships within the program as well as outside it."
"Drew is a hardnosed, blue collar coach who is ready to get after it, and Coach Garty knows from experience what is expected in the Davison Wrestling room," said Athletic Director Dave Beamer. "Both Dixon and Garty have spoken about the importance of having high character and are hard working wrestlers who will work together to continue to bring championships home to Davison. The future continues to be bright as this staff continues to come together."
Drew wrestled at North Branch High School where he was a 2x State Qualifier and then went on to wrestle at Mott where he was a National Qualifier before moving on to Eastern Michigan University to wrestle. He had a coaching stint at Lapeer, and most recently was a wrestling coach and the recruiting coach at St. Clair Community College where he helped to build the SC4 program and image, bringing in great high school talent, sending eight wrestlers to Nationals. During the pandemic he built a wrestling room/barn on his property to help train and work with young wrestlers, and has continued to do that over the past several years.
"Wrestling is in his blood, and his passion for the sport is evident in talking to him," Beamer said. "He has a will and determination to succeed and work overtime to make sure that happens. Just like new Coach Thomas Garty, I know his commitment and work ethic won't be questioned. He will definitely fit into our wrestling program and I look forward to working with both him and Garty to continue to build this staff and program from youth on up to the varsity level. It's very important to all of us."
Drew and his wife, Jess, have three young children Amelia, Mason and MacKenzie.
Positivity Project
Next week's character focus is Kindness
Aristotle defined kindness as, "helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped.”
Kind people think about the needs and feelings of other people, and then act to help those people. Kind people are selfless. That is why a true act of kindness is distinct from helping another person in order to simply gain something for yourself. An individual with the strength of kindness helps others because it’s the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation.
Do you recall a time when someone showed you kindness and what did it mean to you?
