Weekly Update - February 3, 2023
Strive Center for Autism
Valentine's Day
Strive Center will have a Valentine’s Day celebration and card exchange on Tuesday, February 14th. The children will rotate through activities with their peers and focus on peer interaction, large motor skills, fine motor skills and food preparation while having a lot of fun!
If your child brings valentine cards for the exchange (this is optional) you should have received a printed letter with the number of children in your center. If you don't send in Valentines, we will have extras available at the center.
We are looking forward to a fun-filled day. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Get to know Danyelle!
For 2023, instead of just sharing our background info, we are going to share some of our team's answers to a recent survey. We asked staff what they enjoy most about their jobs overall, what they like to teach the most, and what they would tell other people considering working here. We'll share answers from a new staff member each week!
This week, we'll hear from Danyelle, one of our amazing RBTs in Burton.
When we asked Danyelle what her favorite skill to teach is, she answered, "I love running daily living programs."
*See below for a definition of daily living programs.
Danyelle said, "My favorite part about working for Strive is the family oriented staff and leadership. I can tell leadership cares about me as an individual and not only an employee."
What is Danyelle's proudest moment at Strive so far? "My proudest moment at Strive has been watching a client play independently with peers."
ABA Term of the Week
One addition to our newsletter this year will be some definitions of terms we use most often in ABA. We know we use a lot of lingo and we want to help families understand it better. All of these terms will also be on our website in a glossary, so you can check them out anytime.
Today's term is daily living skills.
Daily Living Skills (sometimes abbreviated as DLS or Activities of Daily Living as ADLs) refers to personal self care skills that take place across a variety of settings. These are often skills that contribute to a person's health and safety, as well as their ability to function independently.
Some examples of daily living skills include:
- Toileting
- Hand washing
- Taking care of one's personal items, like putting away a backpack and hanging up a coat or picking up toys
- Preparing snacks or meals
- Dressing and undressing
- Brushing teeth
- Leisure activities
One thing all of these skills have in common is that they can be worked on at our centers, using ABA. Our BCBAs can also help you out with making sure these skills generalize to home, so that if we work on taking care of a backpack at the center, we can support you in working on the same skill at home.
