The Wayland Union School Board met on Monday, April 25, 2022, at Wayland Union High School for their work session. There were no public comments shared at the Board Work Session.
Work Session Topics
Preliminary Budget Overview
Wayland Union Schools plans to build a 2022-2023 budget based on our current enrollment of 2,767 students. Per pupil foundation of $8,935 currently considered even though the Governor has proposed $9,135 per pupil foundation. Items that have occurred since the Governor's initial budget are 7.9% inflation, supply chain issues creating higher prices, war in Ukraine affecting fuel prices. ESSER III unused funds flow to the new fiscal year plus the final ESSER bucket of 11T which is heavily restricted.
District Resource Officer vs. School Resource Officer
The Board of Education discussed several points regarding the possibility of an additional District Safety Officer or a School Resource Officer. Items discussed included: reviewing options of directly hiring a district safety officer; or contracting with the City of Wayland or Allegan County for a School Resource Officer. Topics discussed pertained to demand for the new position, budget, input from current safety/building staff. The Board of Education indicated that they would like to wait until a new Superintendent begins before making a decision regarding this position.
Continued Policy Discussions
Discussion regarding policies on staff and student grooming and dress, as well as student use of motor vehicles specifically for school-sponsored athletic events or extra-curricular activities.
Old Business
Curriculum Proposal - CCA Proposal
Three options for CCA improvements were discussed. It was decided to proceed with an Edmentum online program utilizing Edmentum teachers of record, in addition to current CCA staffing. CCA programming will be closely monitored for success criteria throughout the 2022-2023 school year.
2022-2023 Casino Budget
The board approved the proposed casino budget.
Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
The following RFPs were approved: Pine Street Exterior Gym Painting; Completion of Central Receiving Metal Siding; High School Carpet Replacement; Fuel Contract; and Updated Lawn Care contract.
