As we head into the Winter months, we wanted to remind our families to please be mindful of our school’s neighbors when picking up students at the end of the day. If you are picking up students on Elm Street, you should park on the south side of the street. This prevents students from needing to cross the street and also prevents driveways from being blocked. If you are picking up on Oak Street, please park on the north side of the street. Thank you in advance for helping to keep our students safe.

We wanted to send a huge thank you to our students and staff who are participating in a variety of service projects in December week culminating with our students filling a truckful of toys and much needed supplies to be delivered to Northwestern Settlement House this upcoming Friday 12/16. For many years, Washburne has participated in the Adopt-a-Family program, providing holiday gifts and other essential supplies to families in need. This year, every advisory at Washburne is participating, and we are able to support a number of families working in partnership with Northwestern Settlement House. We want to sincerely thank all of our students, families, and staff for all of their contributions.

This Friday 12/16 all Washburne students will be heading over to the Winnetka Ice Arena for some fun on the ice. As you can imagine, the arena does not have enough rental skates for each student. Students will be asked to bring a pair of skates from home if they have, and we would also appreciate it if you have any extra pairs of skates to bring those as well.

Please keep an eye on your child’s lunch account to ensure that they do not have a negative account balance. If a student’s account dips below $0.00, families will receive an automatic email notification with instructions to deposit more funds. We will still allow students to buy food with a negative balance (up to -$25.00), but the balance should be taken care of as soon as possible.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

Our yearbook students are hard at work creating the book that students will receive at the end of the year. At Washburne, Yearbook is a two-trimester elective that students can choose. Ms. Gabbert begins the course by teaching students principles of design and photography as well as familiarizing students with the technology that they will need to use to create our yearbook. The students then spend the next two trimesters capturing memories from across our building and carefully arranging the yearbook pages. Students are preparing to submit the first half of the book to our publisher prior to winter break and will turn in the final product at the end of trimester two. Yearbooks are distributed to students towards the end of the year.

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

BAND

The 7th and 8th Grade Symphonic Band recently gave a performance at the 2022 Winter Band Concert. Students performed "Prelude and Toccata" (Himes) and "Kyiv 2022" (Balmages) and combined with the 6th Grade Concert Band for "Secret Agent Sugar Plum" (Watson) and "Holiday Assembly Music" (Traditional). Thank you to all students for contributing towards a memorable performance, and to all parents for supporting their young musicians! Next, the Symphonic Band will begin preparing for the 2023 March "Music In Our Schools Month" Concert to perform alongside students from the Glencoe School District 35 Band Program.

The Washburne Jazz Ensemble is also preparing varied music for upcoming performances. Our current selections include "Blues Machine'' (Sweeney), "Splanky'' (Hefti) and "Cool Carnivore" (Pendowski). Students are also working on refining their improvisational skills over the Bb blues pattern. Come hear the Washburne Jazz Ensemble at the 2023 Premier Cadet Band Concert in the Skokie School Auditorium on January 12th!

ORCHESTRA

The Washburne String Orchestra hosted their Holiday Concert 2022 on Tuesday, Dec. 7 along with the Skokie Concert (6th gr.) and Elementary Orchestra (5th gr.) in the Skokie Auditorium. The Washburne orchestra performed "Ventus" (Parish), "Danse Infernale" (DelBorgo), "Dia de Los Muertos" (Meyer) and combined with both the 5th and 6th grade orchestras to play "Orpheus in the Underworld" (Offenbach). It was so nice to be able to bring back our "Grand Finale" with all three groups on stage!!!

I'm very proud of each and every performer for their outstanding efforts at our Winter concert. Thanks to all of the families for supporting their children in their music education!

The 8th grade orchestra students are getting ready for their New Trier orchestra audition in early February. In addition, many members of the Washburne orchestra are now beginning preparations for the IGSMA solo/ ensemble contest on Feb. 11 at Attea Middle School in Glenview.

Washburne's Intramural Basketball house league program is open for registration. Click HERE to register.

This program is available to all Winnetka residents in grades 7 and 8. The program will start with two team/skill formation days on 12/10 and 12/17 from 12:00-1:30. The program will resume after break on Saturdays for an hour between 12:00-2:00 on the following dates: 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/18, 2/25, 3/4, 3/18 and the Championship Game on Tuesday, 3/21 after school.

This is a fun program for any students who enjoys playing basketball. There will be a playing time rotation, allowing for equal playing time for all. There will also be opportunities for 8th grade leadership roles as team captains.

Science. . . . is awesome. Science Olympiad is FINALLY BACK!

Practices began last Wednesday, November 30th, and will be every Wednesday from 3:35-4:30pm in Ms. Berna's room (W221N).

Art club is new and is open to all Washburne students.

This club will provide materials and individual guidance for 7th and 8th grade students who have an interest in art and have projects they want to work on. Come with your ideas!

Class will take place on Wednesdays beginning 11/30 - 5/24 from 3:30- 4:30 in the Art Room C302.

We will be meeting on Tuesdays after school from 3:45-4:45 pm in Room 181 at Skokie School.

Students can attend any & all of the Tues./Weds./Thurs. sessions, depending on their own schedule! Participating students will receive 3 hours a week in the fitness room, providing an opportunity to workout, while being supervised by a certified KW teacher. All students are welcome to join us as we set goals, work on personal training habits, and establish a routine for lifetime fitness.

Registration for incoming kindergarteners and students new to The Winnetka Public Schools in 2023-2024 is now open on the District website and via https://registration.powerschool.com/family/gosnap.aspx?action=30658&culture=en. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2023, are eligible to enroll.

The new student registration process is completed in three steps:

1. Complete new student pre-registration forms online beginning November 16, 2022.

2. Provide the original or certified copy of your child(ren)'s birth certificate and a parent photo ID. The certified copy can be submitted in person at the District Office. If you have the original birth certificate, you may bring it to the District Office to be photocopied. The District Office is at 1235 Oak St., Winnetka.

3. Provide proof of residency and paper registration forms. For your convenience, all required residency documents may be uploaded during online registration. Click here to view the list of documents that will meet these requirements as well as the other forms required for registration (Registration Forms & Information).

Children will not be considered enrolled until both the online and paper portion of registration has been completed and residency documentation is verified. If you have any questions, please contact the District Office at 847-446-9400.

Text-for-Help is is intended to provide confidential support to students at school. This resource is available 24/7, 365 days a year, completely anonymous, and staffed by fully-licensed counselors on the other end. Based on the students’ needs and preferences, a counselor will then direct the user to further assistance.

Time to Gather Up Your Plastic Bags...

The TREX Plastic Film Challenge Started on November 15th!

Each year Go Green Winnetka and all District 36 schools participate in this program, which enlists schools to collect plastic bags and wrap, which are then recycled and made into alternate wood products. The Challenge runs from November 15 - April 15, with winners announced on Earth Day. During this time, bins are placed at D36 schools to collect the *plastics listed below.

●Case overwrap (e.g. water, soda and juice bottles)

●Dry cleaning bags

●Newspaper sleeves

●Ice bags

●Wood pellet bags

●Ziplock and other reclosable bags

●Produce bags
