Principal Update
Viking Friends and Families,
It is May! Traditionally this is the month that we have celebrated educators across the country. It takes a special person to dedicate their life's work to serving children and Bonney Lake Elementary is full of exceptional, hard working teachers, paras, secretaries, bus drivers, custodians and food service personnel.
We want to thank you for joining us in celebrating of our employees last week. We had a marvelous staff appreciation week. The BLE PTA spoiled us with treats, coffee, and lunch. It was also very special to watch our students recognize our staff. Simple gestures such as cards, flowers, cookies and hand written notes littered our desks and hallways. It provided us with an extra jolt of energy and inspiration!
In class this month we are talking about perseverance. the ability to work through situations even when there are obstacles or challenges in the way. Angela Duckworth, an author and researcher, discovered that the most successful people in our world right now have one big thing in common: their ability to persevere through tough situations. She calls it Grit!
In fact, she found that Grit is a higher indicator of success than SAT scores, IQ, or GPA. To harness this Grit students will practice how to respond when things get really hard or when they feel like they can’t do something. Over the next few weeks, there will be stories of inspiring and resilient role models. We will talk about what happens and what our thought process is when we feel frustrated or stumped and how to work through and overcome these obstacles and challenges.
This last stretch of the school year is packed full of learning and fun. Please pay careful attention to our communications so that your student doesn't miss an opportunity. Attendance during these last weeks of school is critical. Please avoid missing school if at all possible.
As always, please let us know how we can better serve you!

Poppy Playtime - Technology Concern
It’s come to our attention that some students are watching, or talking about, Poppy Playtime, a popular survival horror video game circulating on YouTube and TikTok. The controversial videos include graphic imagery featuring Huggy Wuggy, a blue furry monster described as an evil villain with razor-sharp teeth displaying behavior that may be disturbing to some children.
Reports indicate that some of the more violent and distressing material is from subsequent fan-created videos, songs and drawing tutorials also found on these online platforms. Poppy Playtime is not aimed at elementary-aged children.
We encourage families to be vigilant when your child is using any device or watching online videos while at home. If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please contact your school’s counselor.
Thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students.
A Note from the Nurse - Kylie Fossum
"Why didn't I know my child visited the nurse's office today?"
I see on average 30-40 students a day. Most of those visits are for small issues such as:
- Wet clothing
- Need of a bandaid (for example hangnail or scab)
- A bump or itch
- A trip or fall
- Loose tooth
- Minor headache
- Itchy eyes
- Stomach ache (often after eating lunch)
- Administration of daily medication
In most cases my goal is to help the student feel better and get back to class. In these situations (listed above) I won't make a call home. If any of the circumstances listed below occur you will get a call....
- Severe cold/flu symptoms
- Rash or hives
- Covid symptoms
- Head bump with other symptoms
- Severe Injury
- Persistent Pain
- Vomiting
- Severe headache or headache that doesn't subside
- Emergency
- Management of documented medical conditions
I use my professional judgement and training in each circumstance and consider the full assessment of the student. Feel free to reach out to me at any time if you would like to discuss specifics regarding your student. My goal is to provide thoughtful care of each and every student at BLE.
