Help your scholar finish the school year strong!
It is the final lap, and we are still going strong. This is a magical month for our scholars. It’s a time to celebrate all their accomplishments and successes. I can feel the excitement and energy throughout the building, and it is awesome! The scholars have worked so hard this year, and I am proud of all their accomplishments.
This is a very exciting time. We celebrate all the scholars on a job well done, but especially our eighth-grade scholars. They will participate in a promotion ceremony on Wednesday, June 14th @ The Millennium Center (Triumph Church). It has been an exceptional middle school journey. Our scholars have grown in all aspects of life and are prepared for the next chapter of their education, High School. Congratulations to all our eighth-grade families!

Character Trait for June is Community
A community is a group of people living or working together in the same area. People in communities might go to the same schools, shop in the same stores and do the same things. They also help each other and solve problems together. If it's a bigger community, the people in it might not always go to the same places, but they might like or believe in the same things.
What kind of communities are you in? Let us start with your family. They are a type of community because they usually live together and do a lot of the same things. Then there are your friends. They share your ideas and probably go to the same school. Your neighborhood is a community. Your town or city is a community in your state. Your state is a community that is part of the United States. What is the biggest community? Probably the universe. We are all part of it.

PARENTS WE ARE GOING TO NEED YOUR HELP!
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
We have partnered with RXfundraising and Rite Aid to establish a fundraising program that earns funds every time a registered participant fills a prescription or shops at their local Rite Aid using their Wellness+ Rewards Number.
The program is free for participants to use and Glenn W. Levey Middle School will receive funds at the end of each quarter based on the number of prescriptions filled and qualifying purchases that its registered participants make. We need your support to help fund fun activities for students and our therapy dog program. By following these simple steps below, you can make a difference for our community.
All you have to do to get started is to click on our link and register: support.rxfundraising.com/LeveyMiddleSchool
Once you have completed that, please make sure to register for a Rite Aid Wellness+ Rewards Number if you haven’t done so already. Then, transfer your existing prescriptions to Rite Aid and start using your Rite Aid Wellness+ Rewards Number to accrue funds for us on prescriptions and qualifying purchases.
If you would like more information on how you can register you may email us at annmarie.keller@southfieldk12.org or call us at (248) 746-8740.
We look forward to your full support!
E-Cigarettes/Vaping-What You Need to Know
E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids, with nearly 12 percent of high school students nationwide using e-cigarettes on a regular basis. One-third of US middle school and high school students report using e-cigarettes at one point. The most common type of e-cigarette, when it comes to teens, usually looks like other everyday items, such as highlighters , flash drives or smartwatches (or these). Plus, they come in fun shapes and colors that appeal to younger consumers. You can even buy a hoodie with an e-cigarette in the string.
What teens and most adults don’t realize is that almost all e-cigarettes (Vape) contain nicotine. Even when the packaging states zero nicotine, research has found that most actually do contain nicotine. For example, an individual JUUL cartridge contains the same amount of nicotine as a whole pack of cigarettes. Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control as the brain keeps developing until about age 25
This past March, the FDA authorized that e-cigarettes can remain on the market. However, it does not mean the products are safe, nor are they "FDA approved," the agency said. "All tobacco products are harmful and potentially addictive," the FDA said in a news release. "Those who do not use tobacco products shouldn't start."
If your student is using e-cigarettes/vape pens, consult your primary care physician to help develop a plan to stop this harmful habit. For additional resources: visit My Life My Quit.
E-Cigarettes/Vape pens are prohibited on school grounds. If students are found in possession of an e-cigarettes/vape pen they will be suspended long term and taken before the superintendent to decide their future as a Levey student.
FRIENDLY REMINDERS
With our school year in full swing we just wanted to send out a few quick reminders:
- Dress For Success: Our expectation is that students dress appropriately for school. Details regarding our dress code can be found below or on the Southfield Public Schools website.
- Cell Phones: Should be in the student's locker. We want to encourage our students to unplug and interact face-to-face.
- Masks: Highly recommended from the Oakland County Department of Health all students and staff must wear a mask.
- SMORE Newsletter: Please read the newsletter weekly to stay up to date regarding important information.
- Be WHERE You Are Supposed To Be, WHEN You are Supposed To Be There: Timeliness is a life skill.
Closing and Delays
When the School District is closed, delayed, or closing early due to inclement weather and/or other events that warrant a schedule change, information is posted to the district website and also on the local media sites listed below. It is best to rely on more than one source of information when it comes to weather-related announcements. Please see below for ways to get this information:

ATTENDANCE
Class begins at 8:45 a.m. We have been very flexible with arrival time in the mornings this past year as a result of the many changes we have gone through the last year and a half. All students should arrive by 8:40 a.m. for advisories. Students being dropped off by car, can start arriving at 8:30 a.m. Students are allowed into the building at 8:30 a.m. Most of our student body is present on time for advisory classes. We believe we can improve this as we approach the new school year.
Attendance Robocalls
If your child has an unexcused absence, you will receive a phone call from the district. If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding a call you receive, please contact the school’s main office. The number called will be the one listed in MiStar for your child. If you wish to change your phone number in MiStar, you can visit the district website https://www.southfieldk12.org/ and click on Parents & Students. Scroll to Parent Portal (MiStar). Here you will be able to change your phone number or any other information with the exception of your address. If you need to make an address change, you will need to contact the Enrollment Department @ 248-746-7607.
Excessive Tardies to School and Early Dismissals
Families, getting to school in the morning can be a hectic time. Tardies and early dismissals can negatively impact the learning of your scholar. Tardies and early dismissals are also disruptive when many scholars consistently continue to trickle into the classroom throughout the morning or are called down for early dismissals. School begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.
The Levey staff is working very hard to improve literacy, reading and math skills in all of our scholars. Daily lessons are very important. When students are continuously tardy or leave early, they miss a considerable amount of crucial instruction time.
If a scholar is tardy every day by 10 minutes, that is 50 minutes of lost instruction per week.
This is 200 minutes a month of instruction time that is lost. Over the course of a school year this can have a negative impact on learning.

CELL PHONE POLICY
Students are allowed to bring cell phones to school. They are allowed to listen to music and play games on their cell phones before school and after school. Students must keep cell phones out of sight and turned off during the school day. Please reinforce this expectation with your scholar so they are well aware.
Also, please do not allow your child to call or text you from school using their cell phone for any reason, including to come pick them up when they do not feel well. Proper procedure is to report to the teacher first and then the student will be sent to the counseling center to call home if needed. Misuse will result in confiscation of the cell phone and the parent will be required to come pick up the phone and discipline will be enforced. If the student continues to misuse their cell phone, the student will be required to check their cell phone into the office each morning.
The district is not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones.
Please remind your scholar that cell phones, earbuds, headphones and airpods should be in their lockers. Scholars that are in possession of a cell phone, earbuds, headphones, airpods, etc. will be disciplined.
Students should not text parents during the school day; especially if they are not feeling well. They should go to the counseling center if they don't feel well and staff will call you if your student needs to be picked up.
For other circumstances, students may ask to use the office phone. Thank you for helping remind students we don't use our cell phones during the school day. We want to keep our focus on learning during the school day!
Student Code of Conduct:

Such devices shall not be used on any school property, which includes, but is not limited to, school buses. Further, students are prohibited from displaying and/or having the aforementioned devices visible during instructional time or in the passing time between classes.

Masking is Optional Districtwide for all Students and Staff
At the current time parents/visitors are not allowed in the building for safety precautions.
SICK?
If a student or staff member is not feeling well and has any symptoms of illness, even mild ones, please stay home. Symptoms could include cough, sore/scratchy throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of taste or smell. One symptom is enough to warrant staying home as a precaution. We know it can be frustrating to stay home with mild symptoms. Children get sniffles, a cough, or upset stomach from time to time, and this is usually not cause for alarm. However, because of the ongoing pandemic we have to take extra precautions. Therefore, all students and staff should stay home even if symptoms are mild. If a staff member or student begin to exhibit symptoms while they are at school, they will be isolated and sent home as soon as possible. This means an ill student would be asked to wait in a dedicated room where they are not near others until a parent/guardian arrives to take them home. Students who are ill or are symptomatic should be picked up within 30 minutes of parents/guardians being contacted.

Drop off and Pick up Information
PARKING LOT
We usually send this message at multiple times throughout the year because it is so very important.
Driving in our Parking Lot
Please remember to drive with caution as you enter and exit our school parking lots. The traffic flow at all schools is slow and that is the safest for our kids.
Please try not to be in a hurry when dropping off and picking up your children. We have noticed some drivers who have not been driving cautiously and we need to be safe with our children, families, and staff all around.
Crosswalks
Please also remember to always use the crosswalks. It becomes unsafe when children and parents walk in and out of cars in the parking lots. The crosswalks are the safest areas to use when walking in the parking lots.
No Unattended Vehicles in the Drop Off Lanes
Please remember, there is no parking in the drop off lane, so please pull all the way up to the front of the drop off lane (by the front of the school), drop your child off (parents/drivers need stay in the car) and then you may keep moving.
Before School Drop-Off
If you arrive early and don't want to let your child out yet, please park in a parking area in the rear of the school until ready to drop off. Remember, all students need to use a crosswalk with security before and after school.
After School Pick-up
All parents must park in the rear of the school. Students that are carpooled will exit the rear of the building. Students will enter parent's cars in the parking lot. Parents should proceed in the far right lane to exit the campus once their child is in the car.
Respecting Staff
Please respect the Levey staff. Their job is to keep everyone safe. At times they may ask you to follow certain rules you may not agree with. Please do not take it personal. They are doing their jobs. The goal is to keep you, your children, and everyone safe. Thank you for understanding.
Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe.
