Summer Happenings
PW School Counselors Corner
This summer, it is important to rest, relax and recharge for parents and students. In our last newsletter for the 2019~2020 school year, we have included suggestions for a productive yet fun and fulfilled summer.
Having a routine is key but not too rigorous of a schedule. It should feel like summer and if parents put too much pressure on to maintain an hourly schedule, it could lead to burnout. Parents can come up with non-negotiables each day (practice an instrument, read, chores) and these can earn them free time (tablet/technology). Continue to have a bedtime and a flow to the day.

SOCIAL SKILLS
Here are some activities to continue building social skills this summer.
Gardening can be a fun activity for kids and families. With some effort and planning, planting a garden can be a rewarding endeavor. Plus it is so exciting to see something you have grown yourself begin to sprout!
Skills addressed: patience, planning, and problem solving.
Birdwatching can begin immediately- no special equipment needed! Go on a hike or sit in your front or back yard and notice the sounds all around. You can start with five minutes and gradually increase time spent as you and your child begin to notice birds, patterns and other wildlife around you.
Skills addressed: mindfulness, attention, and coping strategies.
Use the good weather this summer to play any outdoor sports. Any sport played can lead to conversations and discussions on skills: sportsmanship, fairness, and perseverance.
