CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
Principal's Notes
Dear Coyote Families,
It has been another AWESOME WEEK at Canyon View Elementary School. Some highlights include celebrating student learning at parent-teacher conferences, stacking cups with Mrs. Jenny Oesterblad during Cool Coyote Lunches, and many opportunities throughout the week for students to write, draw and reflect on all that they are thankful for.
As we head into the fall break, I would like to express my gratitude to the exceptional Canyon View community. During the past few months, your remarkably kind and creative children have been a source of joy and inspiration for me. I believe strongly that "it takes a village to raise a child" and I am deeply proud of our village. Thank you to the families, teachers and staff who give their all each day in support of our students. You are making a difference, and I am grateful to be a part of it!
Let's Make it a Great Year Together,
Mrs. Erica Edmonston (she/her/hers)
Principal, Canyon View Elementary School

CATCHING UP WITH... PUSD
PUSD Parent Ambassadors Program
Hello Families of Students served through PUSD Special Education programs and services. I am the new PUSD Parent Engagement Liaison, and I wanted to share my contact information as well as another wonderful resource we offer, the PUSD Parent Ambassadors program.
Parent Ambassadors are parent volunteers who have their own child(ren) accessing special education services through PUSD. They serve as mentors to guide and support parents of children with IEPs or those exploring special education options. Drawing from their own experiences, they offer invaluable insights and advice to encourage collaboration among parents and school staff on behalf of students.
To reach out to a Parent Ambassador, please submit a request through get connected form. TO apply to become a Parent Ambassador, please complete this application form.
SDCOE Computers2Kids Event
The San Diego County Office of Education and Computers2Kids are hosting an event for families to purchase affordable computers on Saturday, December 2nd, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Cesar Chavez Middle School @ 202 Oleander Drive, Oceanside CA 92057 (Drive thru event). See attached flier for details.
Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application
Although school meals are now free to all students, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students at our school who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and our school is at risk of losing much-needed educational funds. Plus, students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on bus transportation, before and after school care, and home internet!
Income qualifications change annually, so a new application is needed every school year. For school year 2023-2024, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,625 per month, or less than $55,500 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.
Exceptional Family Resources
Our Special Education Department has partnered with Exceptional Family Resource Center to provide a parent engagement series for our families of students with IEPs. The next session will be Wednesday, November 28, 2023, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the District Office Community Room. The topic is “Beyond the Basics of the IEP” where we will dig into the specific portions of the IEP in greater detail and connect the concepts to the IEP forms used by PUSD.

Special Education Instructional Assistant IA II and BIIA
We are looking for enthusiastic, caring and dedicated individuals to join our amazing team of instructional assistants. We have IA II and Behavior Intervention Instructional Assistant Positions open at this time. You can learn more about these positions by clicking on the link above. You will find a short video explaining the position as well as the job description. Our IA positions are generally 30 hours/week with benefits, with hours that align closely to the school day.
Artist in Residence: Science Instruction
Our Foundation funds the Science Artist in Residence Positions at Canyon View Elementary School to provide supplemental science instruction to our students. We are looking for someone with a science background who can provide science enrichment lessons to students in grades K-6, starting in December. A teaching credential is not required, but strongly preferred. The program currently runs two days a week, 6 hours/day (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Artist in Residence positions are based on a set number of hours/year. For more information, please contact Principal Edmonston at eedmonston@powayusd.com. Here is what Kate Recore, our current Science Artist in Residence has to say about this very special position: "I've been at Canyon View for 14 years, as a parent, a volunteer, a foundation president, and a substitute teacher. But, I have never loved the school more than I have as a science teacher. It has been a dream job for me, and I know whoever replaces me will feel the same way."

CATCHING UP WITH... Volunteer Opportunities
Everyone a Reader: Volunteers Needed
We still need a few volunteers!
The Everyone A Reader (EAR) program is looking for volunteer tutors to help kids with their reading. The program was designed by the County Office of Education and its focus at CV is on 2nd graders who are identified by their teachers.
Volunteers come to school at the same time each week to meet with the same 4 students. Students come one at a time for 15 mins each. It takes about 1:15 to get the books ready, meet with the 4 students, and do some brief paperwork.
Volunteers can be parents, grandparents, neighbors, high school students, etc. They do need level 1 clearance as a school volunteer at Canyon View. Level 1 clearance involves a TB test and some paperwork.
We will hold a training for volunteer tutors (or training can be done 1:1 with the program chair).
Please email Sabrina at CVPTOVolunteers@gmail.com with questions or to be placed on the EAR volunteer list.

November Counseling Newsletter
Hope Squad at Canyon View
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are excited to announce that we will be bringing the Hope Squad to Canyon View Elementary School. Hope Squads will be present on every campus throughout PUSD starting this year. Hope Squad is an evidence-based, peer-to-peer youth suicide prevention program. The goal of this program is to increase inclusion and connectedness in schools by teaching students how to provide friendship, encouragement, and support for students who may be bullied or feel isolated. For more information on the program, please visit the Hope Squad website.
At Canyon View, we will offer an opportunity for students grades 4-5 to become a Hope Squad member and peer mentor. Students will be nominated by their peers or teachers and selected by the counseling team. Hope Squad members care about others, demonstrate active listening skills and are trusted by their peers.
The Canyon View Team has been trained as Hope Squad advisors to administer the most up-to-date mental health resources and training. Students in this program will not be asked to act as counselors, but rather will be trained to refer students to a trusted adult for help.
Ms. Maddy, our school counselor, will work with teachers to create a consistent schedule of meeting times once the group is created. In these lessons, Hope Squad members will be trained to take action when someone is struggling and look for warning signs in their peers. They will learn to show empathy, listen without judgment, and reduce stigma regarding help-seeking and mental illness.
Please contact the school counselor or principal, if you have any further questions about the Hope Squad!
Best,
Madison Nash, PPS
School Counselor
