Weekly Update
ConVal High School Happenings - June 4, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
Even though it was only a four-day school week, it was certainly full of activities, in and out of the classroom and building!
Please see more detailed information below, highlighting classroom learning activities in Careers and Education, German, and Biology.
In the halls, we were fortunate to host middle school students as they toured the building with student leaders and school counselors.
Outside, some members from our track and field team competed at the state meet last weekend in Pelham. Despite less than ideal conditions, our Cougars competed hard! We then kicked off the week Tuesday with the varsity tennis team competing in the preliminary round of the state tournament. I was grateful to swing by Adams Park to see our Cougars in action!
Later that evening was the spring performance at ConVal High School. Students in the chorus ensembles and bands performed outside. It was truly a varied repertoire of music! My son clapped and danced as our students showcased their talents.
On Wednesday, our softball and both lacrosse teams competed in the preliminary rounds of their respective state tournaments. Our baseball team competed in their preliminary round on Thursday. Below you will find more information regarding which teams are advancing and when the games will be.
Please note that there are many upcoming important dates. Next week is a very special week for our seniors that will culminate in graduation one week from today at 6:00 pm.
We will host many events outside next week, and it is slated to be quite warm. Please consider bringing water. I look forward to seeing our underclassmen next week and celebrating our seniors during multiple events!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Heather

Senior Important Information
Senior Post-Grad Plan Survey
Seniors need to submit a post-grad plan survey before they're able to pick up their cap and gown on Monday. There will be a station with copies of the survey available to complete at cap and gown pick up. All seniors need to complete this survey, as it contains information that we need to report to the state. A copy of the survey is available on the Class of 2021 Google Classroom and has also been emailed to students. If students want to print it out ahead of time and bring it, all filled out, it could save some time during cap and gown pickup.
Last Call - Senior Final Transcripts to Colleges
Seniors that will be attending college next year need to indicate in Naviance the school that they will be attending so that the counseling office can make sure to send a final transcript to their school without delay. If your student has not yet done this, please instruct them to do so immediately and/or check in with their school counselor.
Please Return Chromebooks, Hotspots, Library and Classroom Materials
With the end of a very eventful school year fast approaching, the members of the Library, Integration, and Technology Services (LITS) team would like to remind students of the need to return all borrowed items — library books, classroom materials, district-issued Chromebooks, hotspots, and ATC-issued laptops. Please return all materials as soon as possible. The library will accept returns between now and the last day of school.
Summer Offerings
ConVal is offering a unique opportunity for Summer 2021. We are offering graduation requirement courses with a focus on hands-on, project-based assignments. Class sizes will be small, and students will benefit from more 1-to-1 time with teachers. Students will also have opportunities to be outside.
Here are the logistics:
Who: Students who struggled during the school year or who want to get a head start on the upcoming school year.
Where: CVHS
When: July 6 - August 5, 2021; Session 1 will run from 8-10 AM, and Session 2 will run from 10:15 AM-12:15 PM. Summer Boost will run Monday-Thursday, with the exception of the first week, which will start on a Tuesday.
How: Transportation and meals will be provided. Students will register for one or two sessions based on their needs.
Classes are free and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Students may earn up to a full credit for each class; classes that are double session will allow the opportunity to earn 2 credits. Please use this link to register for classes.
Class of 2024 Fundraiser
Join us this Saturday, June 5 from 9:00 am-2:00 pm for the Class of 2024’s first annual Community Yard Sale and Vendor Fair.
There will be over 50 vendors present, selling their gently used gems, creative masterpieces, and tasty treats!
German 2 Class Works With German Singer-Songwriter
Students in Frau Concannon’s German 2 class had the opportunity to participate in a songwriting workshop with Antje Dovekot recently. The class worked with the singer-songwriter over Zoom during their first meeting on June 2.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Dovekot holds three top songwriting awards, including the Kerrville New Folk Competition’s Best New Folk Award, Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act, and Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.
The students worked in groups to create lyrics for a song about food, their current unit in German 2. Three verses of the new song were nearly complete at the end of their first meeting. The second session on June 8 will finalize the song that Dovekot will record in her studio.
Spring Performing Arts Festival Features Chorus, Band Ensembles
The repertoire of the vocal performances by the Concert Choir, the Chamber Choir, and the Select Choir included numbers like "Seize the Day!" from the musical Newsies, "The Dream Keeper," and "When You Wish Upon A Star." Student soloists were featured in the songs "When He Sees Me" and "Little Miss Perfect."
The Student Band, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band ensembles delighted the audiences with their renditions of such numbers as "Mary Anne and Mr. Rogers," "Lincolnshire Posy," a jazzy Disney song medley, and the rousing "Hobbits Dance and Hymn" from the Symphony No. 1, The Lord of the Rings.
On June 13, the ConVal Musical "Bright Star" will be performed virtually at 7:00 pm. Visit cvlht.com to purchase your tickets!
Middle School Students Visit ConVal High School
Rising 9th grade students came to ConVal this week for building tours. Over two days, students from SMS and GBS traveled in pods, with the largest pod being 22 students. Led by student tour guides and school counselors, this was the first opportunity for many to feel like ConVal Cougars. We look forward to welcoming you in the fall!

Ms. Muncy's Biology Classes - BioBlitz
This past week students in Ms. Muncy’s Biology classes have been learning first hand how scientists study ecosystems. On Tuesday, John Benjamin, teacher-naturalist at The Harris Center for Conservation Education, taught the students how to use the Seek app by iNaturalist to identify species. The students first practiced on known species such as clover or, for those who were attending class remotely, a pet or a plant from their yard, until they felt comfortable using Seek and collecting data. They were then ready to begin their BioBlitz. Focusing on specific locations on campus and in backyards, the students tried to identify as many different plant and animal species as they could in 45 minutes. In addition to numerous shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers, the students also discovered spring peepers, red backed salamanders, red efts, and garter snakes. The students identified over 100 different species in total, setting the class up to learn more about the significance of biodiversity in our local ecosystems.
Red backed salamanders are common in New Hampshire woodlands. The students found one cover board with 18 hiding under it.
