Level Up Summer Challenge
Summer is almost here and Library Media Services has a free summer reading challenge available to all students.
There are two ways to join and help us reach a statewide goal of reading 3 million minutes this summer.
Students with Internet access can log their reading online and share their progress with fellow students in the protected app space at 808reads.hidoe.us.
Virtual Launch Party - bit.ly/summer21_launchparty
· Hosted by Pōmaika'i Keawe Lyman, the recorded launch party is a great way to kick off summer during the last week of school.
· Includes local author Gabrielle Ahuli'i reading her book, Hiiaka Battles the Wind
Student Quick Start Guide - https://bit.ly/808Reads_Student_SQG
Students with NO Internet access can log their reading using a badge book, an interactive hands-on sticker and activity book that follows the online challenge closely and provides literacy activities to keep kids reading all summer long. Students in grades K-5 who will be returning next school year will be receiving a badge book during the last week of school. Please be on the look out for the book. All completed badge books that are returned during the first week of school in August will be entered into a prize drawing.

Get Ready for Summertime Treats!
It has been said that children learn through play. Cooking with children is a great way to play while also teaching them many skills that they will need when they start school.

Helpful Tips for Parents by Mrs. Nakamura
I know you're thinking, "Hey, summer hasn't even started yet to be thinking about this!" Yes, it's been quite a year of challenges, and we do want you to enjoy your well-deserved summer, but in preparation for when summer nears the end, here are some helpful tips to prepare your child (and you!) for the upcoming school year.
Routines:
- Gradually get back into school year structure and routines.
- Set a bedtime and wake up time and move it closer to what it should be for the school year.
- Set a screen curfew (a "downtime" after which point there are no screens, i.e. mobile phones, tablets, computers, TV, etc.). It is recommended that there is no screen time 1 hour before bedtime. Encourage reading or quiet play instead.
- Consider posting a family calendar with the school start date marked down, to help your family see how many days are left until school starts.
- Review your child's school/class schedule. Make a copy and post it in an area that is highly visible to reference as needed.
- Stay connected to your kids. Kids do best when they feel loved by their parents/caregivers, which happens when you spend quality time with them and listen, validate and empathize with their feelings.
- Kids feel empowered when they know what to do to keep themselves safe. Take any opportunity to let your child feel in control by making choices or taking steps to keep healthy.
- Children learn most from what they see their parents do, therefore think of setting a good example of taking care of your physical and mental health!
