"A Midsummer Night's Dream" triumphs in final weekend
"The course of true love never did run smooth," says Lysander, in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Neither did CPAC's production of the play, which overcame significant weather delays and damage from January's storms. Directed by Katherine Zieman and produced by Sarah Loveland and Clara Gorman, CPAC's winter 2024 performance made audience members forget the logistical challenges faced as they laughed along to the comedy. Seniors Gentry (Lysander), Beck Knight (Demetrius), Anneliese Loveland (Snug/Lion and a fairy sprite), and Arin Spencer-Sherman (Titania, Queen of the Fairies) led the performance, with ninth grader Paige Capitano playing Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons as well as a fairy sprite. Natalie (Helena), Emily (Flute), Cody (Egeus) also performed in the play. Behind the scenes, the production crew included senior Lizzie Loveland (stage manager, costume and prop crews), junior Logan Auble (lights), and junior Bryce Plummer (spotlight). Ninth grader Oren Patrick supported the performance as the assistant stage manager. Senior Arin Spencer-Sherman also helped out with props, and Annie Loveland designed the production's t-shirt.
U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Senior Sophie Bergkvist named candidate
Sophie Bergkvist, a graduating senior at Corbett HIgh School, has been named one of more than 50,000 candidates in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2024.
Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth.
A distinguished panel of educators will review these submissions and select approximately 600 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May. U.S. Presidential Scholars are honored for their accomplishments during the National Recognition Program each June. To commemorate their accomplishments, the Scholars are awarded the Presidential Scholars Medallion.
