Pearland ISD Superintendent Newsletter
Model - Nurture - Share
We are starting the 2023-24 school year. After my inaugural year as the Proud Superintendent of Pearland ISD, I am focused on continuing our Back-to-Basics approach to Build Pearland Proud. This process requires all of Pearland to work together to benefit our students. Our sole purpose is to ensure that our students have the necessary knowledge and skills to take advantage of whatever opportunities come their way. We will focus on outcomes while safeguarding the principles of model, nurture, and share.
“None of us is as smart as all of us.”-Ken Blanchard
Pearland ISD must have a return on investment (ROI) and allow our outcomes to drive our processes and procedures for continued growth and improvement. We believe in an all-learner approach of intentional collaboration that uses data-driven decisions to provide just-in-time remediation as we scaffold new instruction. We must model expectations, nurture relationships, and share information and accountability.
“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”-Phil Jackson
We want our students and all those who serve and support them to understand that the mission to Build Pearland Proud will require character and competence, the two dimensions of trust. We must build a culture that enables defiance of the odds to achieve remarkable outcomes.
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” -Henry Ford
I look forward to another great school year and welcoming everyone back!

Back to School Information and Requirements
Dates and places to help in the process:
July 26: All Students Enrollment Support Day at ESC from 4 - 8 pm
August 3: Welcome Back Day Support at all middle and junior high campuses from 12 - 6 pm
Check campus websites for other dates and times.
HB 114 makes offenses involving the possession and use of vapes a mandatory DAEP (Discipline Alternative Education Placement)offense. Pearland ISD will now be required to place all students caught in possession and using vapes (of any kind – not just those with THC) into DAEP.
Being placed in DAEP is a higher consequence and may result in students being removed from UIL and extra-curricular activities.
Students, please do not bring vapes to school. To help combat this issue, all high schools and junior highs will install vape detectors to mitigate the problem.
YMCA - Big Thanks
If you see some playground improvements at some of our elementary campuses- it is due to Pearland ISD's partnership with the Vic Coppinger Family YMCA.
Safety Drill Week
During the first few weeks of school, each campus will practice all safety drills. Be on the lookout for information regarding this initiative, called "Drill Week".
Watch for Buses
Remember, with the beginning of the new school year, school zones and buses will be part of your commute again. Phones down, head up and drive safe.
STAAR A-F Refresh
You may have noticed that the STAAR scores were not published during the summer as they have traditionally been done. That is because this year, the STAAR test and the accountability system are new. Calibration and scoring will take longer during the inaugural STAAR 2.0 and A-F Accountability Refresh. Campus and district ratings will be released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in September 2023.
The Commissioner of Education has stated that new accountability ratings do not inherently mean different levels of student performance. Our students could reach the same academic performance levels, but our accountability grades could drop. We will be sharing more information regarding the A-F Accountability Refresh.
We will continue to do what is best for all students. STAAR is only one measure of success.
The links below give an overview of the upcoming A-F Accountability Refresh.

STUDENT FRIENDLY REMINDERS
To get off to a great start, we would like to send out a few quick reminders:
- Set the Tone: Be ready on day one; start strong to finish strong. Be on time. Wear your ID. Be positive. Be prepared.
- Be There and Be Aware: We want to encourage students to unplug and interact. Cell phones and earbuds distract from their purpose and opportunities.
- Locus of Control: School life can be stressful, learn to focus on what you can control. Be the captain of your ship. Social media and gossip are not things that matter or things you can control.
- Relationships Matter: Be kind. Engage with others. Appreciate differences. Find a club, organization, or group to join. Belonging gives purpose to action.
