Beaverton Safe Routes to School December Snowflake Hunt
This month Beaverton Safe Routes to School invites your school community to go on a Snowflake Hunt! To participate make a snowflake and place it in a window facing the street and then go for a walk and count how many snowflakes you find. We hope this provides your family with a fun activity and a little encouragement to get outside for a walk or roll. Use the link below for a snowflake making tutorial and make sure your trip is counted in the following ways:
1. Send an email to bsdsaferoutes@gmail.com with the number of snowflakes you found. BSD students (or parents) please include how many students participated and what school they are from.
2. BSD elementary students can also log their miles on their Marathon Kids account. If you need information on how to set up a Marathon Kids account, contact your PE teacher.
3. Post a photo to social media with the following hashtags #BSDsaferoutes #BSDtogether #BSDmarathonkids
A note for Kindergarten Families:
Starting in December and ending the first part of January, staff will be screening kindergarten students for potential reading difficulties as required by Senate Bill 612. We have been doing this test since 2017, but it will be more visible during CDL. The screening will happen online during the school day. A reading support person will join the kindergarten teacher on their Zoom session and students may be put in a break-out room to read to the adult. The test should take no longer than 5 minutes as each of the 3 parts are timed for 1 minute. All grade K (and students new to 1st grade) will be getting screened for potential reading difficulties before the end of January.
Please don’t coach your child during this test. The distraction could hinder their score more than help, as the assessment is timed. It will be important we get an accurate picture of their reading abilities. If any concerns surface for your child, you will receive a letter by the end of January, along with a plan for supporting your child.

WEAR your mask, WATCH your distance & WASH your hands
This year the Oregon Health Authority has encouraged everyone to participate in low-risk holiday activities to keep all Oregonians safe during the pandemic, because we know social gatherings have been the catalyst for a significant level of spread of the Coronavirus. If you are planning on gathering with family or friends this holiday season, it is important to remember the 3 W’s to keep you and your family safe - wear your mask, watch your distance, and wash your hands!
Low risk ideas for this holiday season:
- Make seasonal dishes with the people you live with
- Enjoy time outside and plan a family walk
- Meet virtually
- Shop locally or online
It is safest to stay home and celebrate. If you are planning on traveling or having someone who does not live with you attend your holiday activities, it is important to take precautions and celebrate safely.
Tips to help keep you and your family safe:
- Stay home and avoid others when you are sick or have been exposed to illness
- Get your flu vaccine
- Wear your face covering and only remove it to eat
- Wash your hands frequently
- Maintain 6 feet of distance
- Limit the gathering to 6 or less people
- Take your seasonal activities outdoors
- Prepare individual food plates to limit the sharing of utensils
- Drive instead of fly, if possible
- Get COVID-19 tested before going anywhere or reduce interaction with others outside of your home for 2 weeks before a social gathering
School Based Health Center at Merlo Station High School
The School Based Health Center (SBHC) located at Merlo Station High School is open to all students of all ages within the Beaverton School District. The clinic is open on Wednesdays for in person visits and we can accommodate virtual visits every day of the week. The SBHC is a safe place for students to get caught up on vaccinations, receive treatment for minor illnesses, speak confidentially to a medical provider, get a sports physical and more. Trouble sleeping?, Anxious? Feeling a little down? The SBHC can also connect students with someone who can help. The SBHC has a licensed medical provider and medical assistant and can submit in house referrals for behavioral health services. Most private insurance plans are accepted, as well as Oregon Health Plan (OHP). No insurance? No problem. You may be eligible for a sliding fee discount based on income. Ask the receptionist about a discount when you check in for your appointment. Call 503.941.3210 to make an appointment. Walks ins are also welcome.

Construction Update:
As part of the development of the neighborhood directly across Ridgeline, road construction on both Ridgeline and Kaiser will be on-going beginning next week and continuing into the first week of February. In fact, we believe there will be a detour to 185th when coming from the Germantown Road side of Kaiser the entire month of January. As we learn more, we will keep you updated!!
Sunset Credit Union
Sunset Credit Union has a fun online course for SATO students! It’s a linked HERE .
It's called Banzai and it’s a great learning tool for kids to learn and earn!! Once the child completes the short course, we are able to deposit $25.00 dollars into their account.
It’s not a requirement for them to become a member first of Sunset CU before completing the course, however, for the child to receive the $25.00 dollars, they would need to be a member. Which they are able to do through our website as well.
