In The Know
Some Shifts in Our Work - I wanted to let parents know that we are making a subtle shift in how late slips are to be processed with students at school. We will be asking students who are late to class by more than ten minutes to take their late slip that they get in the office and take it to the teacher for their signature. After receiving this students will be required to turn that late slip in to the attendance office during set times of the day only. Students can turn in their late slips in between classes, at lunch or after school, but NOT DURING CLASS.
We are responsible for reporting attendance accurately and we recognize that our system has a glitch. The reason for the shift is that some students have identified a loop in the system, whereby they get a late slip which prevents a phone from going home, but they don't show up to class. We are simply attempting to close the loop and be better suite to report attendance accurately to you, the family.
New Late Slip Policy - On Monday, April 4, students will be required to verify their arrival to class after receiving a late slip.
- When a student will be 10 minutes late for class, they must get a late slip from the front office.
- When the student arrives in class, they must give the late slip to their teacher for the teacher's signature.
- The student must return the signed late slip to the front office within 24 hours. Students may not use class time to bring late slips to the front office.
- Attendance will be updated when the signed late slip has been returned to the office. Please allow time for the attendance office to update the student's attendance record after the signed late slip is received.
PROM - Students may bring students from outside 4J to Prom only if they are the singular date (1:1) with a student from CHS.
Churchill Athletics Update: From the desk of Kelly Bokn: It has been a pleasure to serve you for the past 14 years....in the math classroom and as Athletic Director, and in my role coaching.
After 32 years in education, I have decided to retire at the end of this year and transition into my next phase of life. I want to thank all of you that have had a part in my growth as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. I know I was far from perfect, but I leave feeling very good about the efforts I gave to our school and community to support kids, coaches, and families.
What's up next and what is the process ahead? We have three Head coaching vacancies that need to be filled as a new era of Churchill Athletics is formulated. First on the agenda is finding a replacement for me as the High School Athletic Director. The position has officially been closed and interviews will conclude early next week. Patrick Brown, District Athletic Director, and Greg Borgerding will be heading up the hiring process for that position.
Once that position has been announced. The process to interview and hire a new head football coach will take place next. All efforts will be made to include the newly hired Athletic Director in that process. Once that process has been completed. The process will begin to interview and hire a new Girls Head Basketball coach.
Lastly, the process to interview and hire a new Boys Head Basketball coach will conclude the Spring hirings for the three vacancies of departing coaches, AJ Robinson, Terry Harrison, and Kelly Bokn. It will be an exciting Spring for new faces and opportunity for Lancer Nation to build upon previous achievements and continue to be a strong contender in the 5A ranks. I wish everyone well and will continue to serve and support in all ways possible until my last day in June.
Best wishes,
Mr. Kelly Bokn
Athletic Director, Churchill High School
Back by popular demand courtesy of an ODE grant! - The grant, Lane Health Science Hub, creates a regional support system to improve access and successful outcomes for traditionally under-served students in all 16 school districts and all 12 Health Science CTE Programs of Study. Expanding learning beyond standard school hours, special events (middle school career fair, Saturday workshops, and MedSplash! summer camps) will provide culturally responsive, authentic and integrated academic and workplace learning opportunities to a diverse pool of middle and high school students. Lane ESD is now accepting applications for MedSplash! Summer Camps. Please share the application with your students and/or school navigators. Participation is capped at 30 students per program. Application closes on April 30th.
High School MedSplash! The two week program (July 18-22 & July 25-29) will also be located at Lane Community College Main Campus in Health Professions and will include academic and hands-on activities far beyond those offered in the classroom, tours of state-of-the-art healthcare facilities and skills training including CPR. Keith Fjordbeck - Many thanks to Keith for taking many hours over spring break to hang the varied world flags, LGTBQ+ flags, Black Lives Matter, and flags representing individual tribes and first nations, in our halls and public spaces. It is an investment in time and energy. I am so grateful for the thought and effort put into making sure our school space is open and welcoming to all of our students.
