Sunday Chat with Principal Dothard
Hello Hornet Nation,
Time flies when you're having fun! We are 3 weeks away from the end of the 3rd quarter, 3 months into 2023, and 3 weeks away from Spring Break! Let's finish the 3rd quarter strong by taking advantage of The Learning Center (TLC) and teacher recovery during lunch to make up and/or finish assignments. If you are working on quarter 2 recovery it needs to be completed by March 30th. Remember, the quarter grades are averaged to find your cumulative GPA at the end of the year, don't let 1 quarter bring your GPA down.
Today is daylight savings, so don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour!
Spring sports have officially started, so get your sunblock and outdoor chairs ready! I look forward to seeing our Hornets compete in Spring Sports!
Let's have a GREAT week Hornet Nation!
Mr. Dothard

Student Cell Phone Use
Did you know that even just a few minutes on a cell phone texting, checking social media, etc adds up over the course of a school day? Students, who use their devices for just 5 minutes each period, lose nearly 1 period of instructional time per day (35 minutes of class). Over the course of 1 week, those 5 minutes per class adds up to nearly 4 missed periods! Personal devices can be a HUGE distraction for students. Please start this year off right, by keeping personal devices away in your bookbag or at a charging station if your teacher has one available. There is a direct connection to phone usage during the school day to grades. Encourage your student/s to only use their phone during lunch, between classes, or when approved by a teacher.

Nominations will be selected each month to pass along The Golden Spatula Award to our cafeteria staff.
This annual award, in memory of George Stewart, who worked with St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks youth basketball for many years, was presented to Coach Alton McCoy during one of the Select Middle School basketball gamesThe award represents coaches who demonstrate the true meaning of sportsmanship and who lead by example through fair and honest gamesmanship for both players and parents. Congratulations! Thank you to our very own, Coach McCoy for representing St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks and the youth of this county.
