BULLDOG BULLETIN
New Britton Elementary
December 2, 2022
I AM. YOU ARE. WE ARE. BULLDOGS!
News from Mrs. Mankin
Kindergarten Super Reader Parade
Kindergarten - Miss Esposito
1st Grade - Mrs. Michalowicz
We started our day with a celebration of learning! Our kindergarten students have been studying Super Reader Powers: Pointer Power (tracking as we read), Sound Power (thinking about the sounds that letters make in words), Picture Power (using pictures to help us determine unknown words), Reread Power (rereading when something doesn't make sense), Snap Word Power (knowing high frequency words "in a snap," and Book Talk Power (sharing our stories with others). We celebrated the hard work our K readers with a Super Reader Parade in which students showcased a favorite book by holding it high as they walked the route. This was such a joyful way to start the day and validate the work and growth of our students! Our young readers were just beaming with pride as older students clapped for them.
Our winter NWEA assessment window opens this Monday, December 6. Your student's teacher will share more information regarding specific dates of the assessment. Please read the information below for more details regarding NWEA.
We are excited that our NBE PTO awarded the library a $500 grant to purchase 50 eBooks! We have chosen titles ranging from nonfiction books about animals, biographies, and historical topics to fiction graphic novels and series books. These books are at a variety or reading levels and interests, making them good choices for a variety of readers. Kids will be able to easily access the books from their Clever page. They can read the book, listen to the book, or listen with the words highlighted. These new titles should be available to students within the next couple of weeks! We would like to send a big thank you to our parent teacher organization (all families are members of this great organization).
We are happy to share that New Britton raised just over $650 in support of Riley Children's Hospital. This money will be used to support patients at this Indianapolis children's hospital. We are thankful for a service-minded community and the opportunity to engage in a fun day in support of a great cause.
As always, thank you for partnering with us in education!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

NWEA Assessment Information
The NWEA test is a computer adaptive test that students take three times per school year. The results of the test reflect the student’s academic knowledge, skills, and abilities. This test helps teachers make informed instructional decisions specific to each student. Over the next two weeks, students will complete the Winter NWEA-Reading and NWEA-Math assessments. Your child’s teacher will notify you when testing takes place. Testing results will be emailed to families via a ParentSquare message a few weeks after testing.
Families of kindergarten and first grade students will need to provide headphones that are compatible with their child’s iPad for testing. Please check your student’s iPad and verify that the NWEA app is downloaded through Mosyle Manager. Thank you!
Holiday Lights Recycling Program
This Holiday Season, HSE is asking you to give a gift to the Earth by making the choice to be more sustainable. HSE Schools will be hosting a district wide Holiday Light Recycling Program. Starting December 5th and going until January 13th each school will be collecting old, broken, tangled, or unwanted holiday lights. Technology Recyclers will take these unwanted/unusable lights and break them down into useable components that will be used to make new products.
- This will be the third year for the holiday light recycling program!
- During the 2020/2021 season you helped collected and recycle 3,519 pounds of holiday lights!
- During the 2021/2022 season you helped collect and recycle 4,711 pounds of holiday lights.
- In two years of recycling holiday lights, you have helped recycle the equivalent weight of a Ford F250.
- Your small choices have helped prevent a total of 8,230 pounds of plastic, metal, and glass from ending up in a landfill.
- You helped make a HUGE impact.

Snack Attack - Fishers Youth Assistance Program
NBE is pleased to announce the return of the Snack Attack program for those students in need. This program, supported by the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, is designed to provide students a little extra nourishment for the weekend until they can receive a hot meal at school on Monday.
Here's how the program works. Your student will pick up a small sack of food to be taken home over the weekend. The sack is filled with individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, fruit cups, pop tarts, peanut butter/crackers, Goldfish crackers, etc. The type of snacks will vary each week. Please let us know if your child has a peanut allergy as he/she will receive a special bag of peanut-free snacks.
There is no cost to you or the school. This program is open to students that qualify for the reduced lunch program or have an increased need currently.
To be part of this free program, you must sign up your family online. https://forms.gle/xrKNaxRaLypSqKvV8
