A CINDERELLA STORY
Viking Family,
March is one of my favorite months of the year! And it’s not just because of Spring Break (though I’m super grateful for it) but because of March Madness! I love all sports, but truly the only ones I keep up with on tv are college football and college basketball. NCAA basketball is the best!
I can just hear legendary commentator, Dick Vital, say, “And Loyola Marymount moves on to the Sweet Sixteen, Baby! Their Cinderella season continues!” As an English teacher, I always used Cinderella and March Madness when teaching about literary allusions. I would use this example with my students and they would ask 2 questions- “Who is Loyola Marymount?” and “What does Cinderella have to do with college basketball?”
What I love most about March Madness is the Cinderella Story! The story of the underdog who wasn’t supposed to be in the mix. The little-known, 16-seed with players no one has ever heard of but who make an exciting run in “The Big Dance.”
Every year, I look for these bracket-busting teams, and I become their fan. I love the ones that grind it out and truly believe they have every right to win, to succeed. I love the ones that ask, “Why not us? Why not now?” I love that mentality! There’s something thrilling about rooting for the underdog. It’s like you get to experience their victory as if it were your own, riding the emotional wave with them. Those moments when they pull off that unexpected upset, against all odds—it’s pure magic.
The truth is- underdogs aren’t born overnight. For any team to “punch their ticket to the Big Dance” takes so much hard work, a resilient mindset, and some amazing fairy godmothers. As I write this, I realize I’m just as big of a fan of the adults that facilitate these Cinderella stories as I am of the underdogs. Their work is life-changing, and in some cases, life-saving.
Our teachers and parents have a front row seat to this kind of magic all year. In fact, they could be the fairy godmothers in this story. They get to witness kids get better at math, make the team after being cut last year, and pass the test after failing it previously. They get to see self confidence grow in the most introverted students. They get to see students struggle with and learn a new language. They get to see that Senior earn their EMT certificate when, as a freshman, no one was sure that kid would graduate. The true magic of a fairy godmother is not in the wand but in helping Cinderella believe in herself. Our people do just that.
I love that I work in a place where every student has a chance at “the Big Dance”- whatever that means for them. I love that I work with so many amazing people- faculty, staff, and parents- who help kids believe the very best about themselves. I love that we live in a time and place where we can write our own Cinderella stories.
I love this place,
Your Proud Principal,
Janda Castillo

SUPPORT THE CANALES FAMILY
The Canales family needs our support during this tragic time, and we wanted to share with you a few options to meet their many needs:
- A local GoFundMe has been established to raise $75K to help with hospital expenses for baby Corinne, funeral expenses, and having a new baby at home.
- LVHS Faculty, Staff, and Students are holding a Diaper and Wipes Drive to provide for this precious new baby girl. Please bring any size diapers and wipes to the high school reception area now through Spring Break, and we'll make sure they get to the Canales family.
- Last, but certainly not least- support this family by supporting LVHS baseball and Colby. Mrs. Canales loved being a sports mom, and Colby loves playing baseball for the Vikings! In her honor, go out and support LVHS baseball.
Coming around our people when times are tough is what we do best. Let's make sure that the Canales family feels our strong support as they walk the difficult days, weeks, and months ahead.

Let's get out and GET LOUD FOR OUR LADY VIKINGS!
DOWNTOWN FOR THE DUB!
Congrats to Coach Hilsy and his JV soccer team in their historic first win over Austin Eastside for the program's first ever JV squad! The future looks bright for Viking soccer!
LET'S GO GOLF!
TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!
In the worst wind conditions, the Lady Vikings Blue team persevered and were the Champions in the Burnet at Legends golf tournament this week! (13 teams represented)
- Violet Wheeler was superb with her short game today - she finished in 3rd with a score of 86.
- Jenna Janson had a monster 375-yard drive and great tee balls in her round of 92.
- Bailey Burlew had a PR today of 93, her positive attitude and play on the greens was outstanding.
- Adriana Owen controlled the ball well in the wind and shot 96 (a very good 43 on the front 9).
- Hannah Koenning started strong but wasn't able to finish because of illness.
Tough greens and tough conditions helped the Lady Vikings get mentally tougher today! You can't see the wind in the pictures, but the picture of the carts on their side represents the day very well...
2 IN THE TOP 10!
The LVHS boys Gold team placed 2nd and had 2 players in the top ten medalists in their last tournament! Individually,
