Reynolds' Report
Hello Roadrunner Families!
It was a joyful week here at First Street School! I loved seeing so many parents at our Coffee Chat on Thursday. The feedback I received from you all was invaluable and will definitely help guide improvements here at our incredible school!
This week will be full of fun opportunities as well! We will be holding our first English Language Advisory Committee meeting this Tuesday in the library from 6:00pm-7:00pm. The goal of this meeting will be to get feedback from families on how to best support our English Language learner students this year.
We will also be holding our first Family Learning Night on Thursday from 5:00pm-7:00pm, Family Science Night! This will be a fun event where students can learn alongside their families about how much fun science can be. Our PTO is generously sponsoring a snack table. It will be a fun event and I look forward to seeing you there!
Did you know that October 4th is National Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day? We encourage you to start thinking about a safe path to take to try out walking, biking, or rolling to school on October 4th! This will be a good opportunity to talk with your student about safe crossing expectations at our school, like listening carefully to the crossing duty, and crossing only at the crosswalk, even if you are with an adult.
If your student rides a bike, or rolls to school on a scooter or skateboard, it is extra important to remember to have them wear a helmet every day. Not only is it the law, but it is also one of the best ways to help ensure that your student stays safe on the way to school. If your student doesn't have a helmet, consider attending the Lincoln Health Fair at Glen Edwards Middle School Sunday the 24th to get a free helmet for your child! You can also reach out to our office and we will help get a helmet for your student.
I look forward to seeing what other safety ideas you and your student have for Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day on October 4th!
Have a great week, Roadrunners!

Topic of the Week
Strategies for Big Feelings : Write it Down/Draw a Picture
This week, your students learned about how writing about feelings or drawing a picture about our feelings can actually help us feel better! Writing and drawing activate different parts of our brain than just speaking, so this can be a way to calm the brain down if asking for help or deep breaths aren't working.
Students were provided with some ideas for how to do this strategy, which are included below. Try out one of these strategies yourself this week, maybe share it with your student so they can see that grown-ups use these strategies, too!
Try writing it down! Use these sentence starters:
- I am feeling… because…
- When… happens, I feel…
Try drawing a picture! Art helps us feel good:
- Draw what happened
- Draw what you think your emotion looks like
- Draw something that makes you feel happy

Updated COVID Protocols
Student Quarantine:
Effective this year, California Department of Public Health has replaced most of the requirements about student quarantine with recommendations. The one remaining requirement is that students who are ill must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aide of fever-reducing medications before they are able to return to school.
