September is attendance awareness month. Every day counts and matters! Some ways you can help: communicate with the school, make attendance a priority, and help your child stay healthy and engaged. See the following document for more details.

There will be a senior meeting on Wednesday, September 6th at 10:00am in the auditeria. Herff Jones will be here to talk to Seniors about ordering caps, gowns, and announcements. If your child has CCP classes or is off campus for any portion of the day, please have them plan to attend this meeting. Students that attend Laurel Oaks will have Herff Jones visiting on September 21st.

Our goal is to meet with each and every family at WHS this school year for a parent-teacher conference in the building.

What will this look like? Each family will get to meet with a teacher representative at one of the parent teacher conference nights this year. During this time, we want to discuss current academic goals and progress, activity involvement, interests, and plans for after high school. We also want to give you the opportunity to provide us with your feedback and suggestions.

Here are the scheduled conferences for the 23-24 school year: September 28, November 9, February 1, and March 14.

Please anticipate an invitation from a WHS staff member for one of these dates. We look forward to meeting with you on our campus and strengthening the partnerships between the school and home. If you would like to request a conference during the September session, please fill out the following form.

Cell phones and reducing distractions in the classroom continues to be a focus. We need your help with reminding students of appropriate use of personal devices at school. Below are guidelines from the student handbook.

A In order for students to work at their full potential in class, it is imperative that they focus all of their attention and effort towards academic instruction and activities. Unfortunately, the cell phone can cause a distraction to this process and creates a negative impact on a student's learning. Therefore, in an effort to help students to be fully engaged in the educational process, students need to have their phone put away during class time. No electronic device brought by the student is the responsibility of Wilmington High School. Students bring electronic devices at their own risk.

1. 1. Personal electronic devices are NOT permitted during class time.

   2. Students must immediately give up the electronic device to a staff member who requests it due to misuse.

   3. Students who fail to give up the device may be subject to increased discipline.

   4. If an electronic device is confiscated a student may receive a consequence and the phone can be retrieved at the end of the day.

   5. If multiple infractions exist, a parent may have to come in and pick up the phone and additional consequences may follow.

   6. Wilmington High School also suggests that parents/guardians have the appropriate insurance on phones and if they are stolen should contact the authorities.

   7. Wilmington High School will limit investigations of lost or stolen phones due to the fact they are not a necessity at school.

   8. Parents have the opportunity to contact their child by contacting the front office. Students may also ask for permission to use the office phone to contact their parents.

Homecoming Week is coming up! There will be activities and events the week of October 2nd-6th. The WHS Homecoming Dance will be the evening of October 7th.

From September 5th-October 6th students will need to be in good standing to attend the dance:

• Students cannot have more than 2 unexcused absences or tardies
• Students cannot be suspended from school or have in-school restriction

Please review all dance guidelines prior to the dance.

WHS has a closed lunch policy. Below are a few reminders from the student handbook. This information was reviewed with students in class meetings.

Wilmington High School has a Food Pantry done in partnership with the Free Store Food Bank. Any family with a student attending in the Wilmington City School District is eligible for this program. An interested family simply needs to complete the attached form and send it with their student and someone from the WHS Food Pantry will contact them for additional information!

We hope to curb food insecurity in our great community and continue to grow our students into community leaders!

Students that drive to school must purchase a parking pass to park in the paved student lot. Passes will be available for purchase the first two weeks of school for $25 in the front office. Students have received a google form to fill out if they want to purchase a pass. After September 5th, students without a permit will need to park in the gavel lot. If violations occur, the following may be a result: posted warning, ticket with fee, towing at owner's expense.

Students may choose park with out a permit in the gavel lot. No students are permitted to park in the staff lot or behind the building.

We are excited to have the mobile dentist coming to Wilmington Middle School and Wilmington High School on September 22, 2023.

Great news! Our school has partnered with Smile Programs…the mobile dentists to offer in-school dental care. Sign up your child today at www.myschooldentist.com. Even better, dental care is usually at no cost to you. All insurance is accepted including Medicaid and CHIP. For those without insurance, a low cost self-pay option is available.
