Hello EECV Families!

November brings cooler weather. Please remember to dress your children for outdoor play when they are at school. Each day our students get time to exercise their bodies and build strength and balance at motor time. As long as the weather is 32 degrees or warmer students may be outside on our playground. Coats or jackets, a hat, warm shoes, and gloves are helpful to wear to school when the weather gets colder.

November also brings parent-teacher conferences. There are two evening dates and one daytime date for conferences. Conferences are a great time to hear how your child is progressing in preschool as well as a time to talk through any concerns you may have. If you have not set up a conference time please contact your child's teacher to see what times are still available. Parents get to choose whether they attend the conference in person, over the phone, or virtually.

Hello! We are Jennifer Clayborn, Michele Krueger, and Sarah Green, and we are the Speech-Language Pathologists at Elyria Early Childhood Village. Our role as Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) includes assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication difficulties in students. SLPs work closely with teachers, parents, and other specialists to create tailored intervention programs that address speech and language challenges effectively. SLPs employ various techniques, activities, and therapies to help preschoolers develop essential communication skills, such as language comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and articulation. Through individual or group sessions, we provide support to children with speech disorders, language delays, or difficulties in social communication. By fostering effective communication skills, SLPs empower preschoolers to express themselves clearly, interact with peers, engage in classroom activities, and lay a strong foundation for future academic success. Our role also includes education of teachers and parents on strategies to support speech and language development in everyday activities, ensuring a collaborative approach to the child's progress.

As the holidays approach, our team wanted to offer some gift ideas that might also provide opportunities to further develop your child’s speech and language skills during play. There are many low-tech options that can provide endless hours of play for you and your child, such as books, building toys (e.g. blocks, magnatiles, nesting cups), toy animal and people sets, musical instrument sets, cause and effect toys (e.g. wind-up toys, bubbles, pop-up toys), puzzles, and toys that encourage imaginative play, such as toy food and kitchen sets, costumes, dolls, and doctor/vet toy sets. If your child is interested in games or activities that involve technology, it’s important to use them interactively and socially. For example, you can talk to your child about actions and characters in a game, how to play a game, who the characters are in a show or movie, or what your child likes about the game or show. Books & Toys: A Speech & Language Gift Guide

We have been busy in the Peach Room learning about and exploring concepts related to the season of Fall. A funny book we read in class was, When the Leaf Blew In by Steve Metzger. It was about a leaf blowing across the farm and causing all of the farm animals to sneeze, “Achoo!”. Some of our other activities included a fall themed sensory table that promoted color sorting, apple and leaf prints, and using pom poms in the color of common apples (red, green, and yellow) to work on our fine motor skills.

Activities for home related to the season of Fall:

• Pumpkin Boats: Carve little pumpkins into boats that really float! This is such a fun and easy sensory play idea for kids.
• Fall Soup: (water play) Quick and easy natural Fall sensory bin that is a great way to cap off a nature walk this fall
• Apple Scented Cloud Dough: Cloud Dough is a fun sensory material, and it is so incredibly easy to make, and safe for children of all ages.
• Play in leaves: Gather fall leaves into piles and let the kids run and jump through them for loads of proprioceptive, vestibular, tactile input, AND fun!
