Winter Weather Guidelines
Winter weather galore! I hope you’ve all stayed safe and warm during these extreme temps and precipitation. Our leadership team recently discussed our protocol for the playground when there is snow and/or ice on the ground. Here is the plan:
Icy - Indoor Recess
Snow covered blacktop and field - Indoor Recess
If the blacktop is cleared but the playground/field is snowy
Outside
Expectation will be boots (a boot that will not become saturated when in snow) can go in snow, no boots stay on blacktop
Recess supervisors will do their best to keep non boots on the blacktop, but it is a student expectation and responsibility to follow the adult directions.
If a student goes into the snow without snow boots and has wet shoes, we do not have an extra pair to give them in replacement.
Please talk with your students about these expectations and we will share them at school as well. The district does not do snow removal of playgrounds, and we do not have an efficient method of snow removal at school. If you’d like to volunteer to clear the blacktop (should it snow again), please let me know!
As we prepare for the 2024-2025 school year, it is time to assess our student enrollment. Please submit this form if your child will NOT be attending Ridgeway next year. We need to know as soon as possible or no later than April 5, 2024.
Unit Notes
Unit A
Unit A is looking forward to starting iReady on Monday. We are excited to see student growth. A few helpful reminders: please make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep each night; eats a healthy breakfast; and brings a healthy snack or two daily. We will be doing small increments daily in the mornings and in the afternoons.
Please look for an email from your child’s homeroom teacher for Munch-n-Read snack sign-up for February.
Unit B
Unit B will have our Valentines Day party on February 14th. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Ms. McCoy hmccoy@cpsk12.org. We love how ridgeway families support their students’ learning at home. Some ideas for math practice are: Second graders should be practicing calculating totals for combinations of coins, telling time on an analog clock, and measuring with rulers using inches and centimeters. Third graders should be practicing basic multiplication and multi-step word problems.
Unit C
In Science we are studying the properties of matter and changes in matter. Ask your student to explain mass, volume and density.
If you would like to help with the Unit C Valentine's party please sign up through the link below.

Spelling Bee
Ridgeway students are invited to participate in the School Spelling Bee. Please use the link below to register your child/children. The event will take place on Thursday, February 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the media center. Parents are invited to attend. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 6. This is a firm deadline as I need time to prepare materials. If your student is not a member of the Spelling Club and would like a study packet, please indicate that on the registration form. If you prefer, you may send me, Maria Cox, an email or a note with the following information: student name, homeroom/unit/age, parent name, parent email and phone number, home address, and need a study packet. Please send to mcox@cpsk12.org. I am looking forward to a great competition!

Specialist News
A Message from Ms. Felmlee - Learning Specialist
We started off 2024 with a quick review.
In reading, we are working on phonics, blending, decoding, inferences, fluency, compare and contrast, and comprehension. We are working on these skills at their ability level as well as grade level. All of the students are working hard on these skills.
In writing, we are working on correctly spelling consonant-vowel-consonant words and trick words. They are also working on sentence and paragraph writing using correct spelling of known words, correct capitalization and punctuation.
In math, we are working on number sense, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and word problems. The students are working on picking the operation needed to solve the problem as well as the numbers that are needed for the problem.
Our executive functioning skills and behavior skills for organization, turn taking, and transition are being practiced in various settings. These skills are being demonstrated and practiced in writing and playing various games. The older students have been great examples for the younger students.
