September 7, 2023
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
Thank you to those who came to our Welcome Back Ice Cream Social last week! It was a beautiful day and we had a great turnout. I am sorry that I didn’t get to catch up with folks more. Lake Champlain Chocolates was short-staffed and so I hopped into the truck and started scooping. Big thanks to Communications Coordinator, Julia, who also jumped in (quite literally) to help by taking orders. I’d also like to thank Kate and Tim Jarvis, Board member Laura Williams, Lissa McDonald and Holly Rouelle for handing out ice cream to those in line. It was a great way to kick off the new year and see so many students and families. The smiles made it all worthwhile. Welcome back!
Student Leadership Team
SBHS Students Rama AL Namee and Kelsey Smith have joined Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism and Social Emotional Learning Monica Desrochers in developing a Student Leadership Team to promote social change district-wide. It is open to all 6-12 students and the first meeting will be on Thursday, September 28th from 10:20 am-12:40 pm. Monica will be contacting the teachers of students interested in joining to create a plan about missing instruction. Students can reach out directly to Monica at mderoschers@sbschools.net, scan the QR code in the flyer or go here to sign up!
Transportation
We again apologize for the hardships created this week due to the cancellation of certain bus routes. As of today, we are not expecting to need to cancel any routes during the upcoming week (September 11-15). But as things may still change, we do encourage you to refer to the Transportation Dashboard on our district website for daily transportation information.
We are happy to report that we will be rolling out our Stopfinder application for Rick Marcotte Central School routes next week. Parents and guardians of students registered for those routes will be receiving a separate notification for how to initiate their mobile account. We are also pleased to announce that we have hired a new bus monitor this week and have received communication from two bus driver candidates who are interested in seeking employment with us. Neither of them currently have their Commercial Driver License (CDL) certification but if they proceed with employment we will support that certification process (which takes about three months), and in the meantime they can assist as bus monitors and van drivers, and can start learning our routes.
As I mentioned at the School Board meeting last night, if a student misses school as a result of transportation, those absences will be excused. If you do need further individualized support, please reach out to your school directly.
As a reminder here is the letter from that last week that Tim Jarvis, Senior Director of Operations and Finance wrote about planned cancelations for certain routes based on driver availability and other information about our transportation schedules. Please read his letter here.
PowerSchool
In order to make sure you are receiving the most up to date information, please remember to update all of your contact information in PowerSchool so you can be informed of school closures and other updates from your student's school as well as the district and make sure you are subscribed for transportation information (more on that below). There are also items that you can opt in or out of, so please go here to make any changes.
As well, if you have an SBHS student, please consider taking advantage of the SBHS Text Messaging Service. See details below!

This week’s staff spotlight is dedicated to our incredible Facilities team. Headed by Bart Miceli and Lawrence Francis, this incredible team of groundskeepers, electricians, maintenance workers, and custodians keep our schools and grounds clean, orderly, and running smoothly.
Every day they are working hard for our students and I am incredibly grateful to the entire Facilities team. They are Michael O’Brien, Ryan Burritt, Jeremy Rushford, Mason Marckres, Kerian Francis, Penpa Sherab, Alexis Seraus, Diane Lampman, Paul Kolbenson, Lobsang Norbu, Korina Davis, David Chol, Ray Kenyon, Saidi Ndagijimana, Jesucita Garcia, Raymond Hall, David Sinchuari, Miroslaw Wietrzyk, Man Rai, Dega Anak, Dulce Polanco, Tashi Dolma, Tenzin Tsultrim, Les Burdzy, Jeffrey Hendee, Jamyang Sonam, John Wagner and Guy Estiverne.
This summer they oversaw projects including roof repairs at all the schools, replacing the cafeteria floor at Rick Marcotte, carpet projects at SBHS, FHTMS, Chamberlain, and Orchard. A new hot water heater was installed in the FHTMS kitchen and control systems for our infrastructure components were installed at SBHS, FHTMS, Marcotte, and Orchard. On top of that, they cleaned every classroom, hallway, cafeteria, and gymnasium in preparation for staff and students’ return. If you see them in the hallway or working around the schools, say hello!

Student Spotlight
The student spotlight will be back in the coming weeks as students are still settling in to the school year.
If you know a student that deserves a spotlight, you can nominate them here.

The 5th Grade Committee will be visiting the newly renovated Winooski K-12 school to see how their space facilitates student learning.
The charge of this committee is to evaluate whether the community should move 5th grade to the middle school or keep them at the elementary level. They will produce a report, similar to the Enrollment Committee's report outlining the process for community involvement, the factors considered, and the final recommendation will be presented to the Board for recommendation to the start an Infrastructure Committee after taking action to move or not move grade 5 to the MS, which may include renovations, new builds, and/or redistricting.
Their timeline is:
Sept 2023: 5th grade committee engages in community engagement regarding needs
December 2023: 5th grade committee recommendation and report presented to the board
TBD: Initiate Planning work on option(s) for MS/HS solutions
Alternative Program
The Alternative Program was recently covered in Seven Days and The Other Paper.
As a reminder, we have secured a space at 1025 Airport Drive, the former Centerpoint Space, and are looking forward to welcoming students back this fall. This integrated, therapeutic program will provide additional pathway options to our students and spaces will be available to students in other districts. We have also hired Katie Cunningham as director of this program. Katie was formerly the director of the Centerpoint School and we are thrilled to have her knowledge and expertise lead this program. Additional seasoned and skilled providers have been hired. We look forward to sharing more information about the staff and the program name soon.
Free & Reduced-Price Meals and Universal Free Meals
All students will have access to one free reimbursable breakfast and one free reimbursable lunch at school each day!
The State of Vermont is again providing money for free meals through the Universal School Meals Program.
Milk is included as a part of a reimbursable meal. However, if your student wishes to have milk to accompany a meal brought from home it is considered an Ala Carte item and is not part of the USDA meal programs. If your student brings lunch from home and wishes to purchase milk, the cost is $.50.
Ala Carte items, including milk, may not be charged; a student must have funds in their account or pay cash at the register.
You can help provide free meals to ALL students in future years!
What? We are asking all families to please fill out this application for free and reduced price school meals. We will send home paper copies to all students the first week of school. Please fill it out and send it back with your child.
Why? If many families fill out and return this form, we will get more money from the federal government for free school meals now and in the future. We will also get more money for other school programs - at our school, we use these funds for reading and math intervention teachers, tutoring and support for our students who are homeless. Filling out this form also helps our community provide free summer meals to all kids.
How? Fill out the form and return it (in a sealed envelope to protect your personal information) to the GCS main office or your child's teacher. You may also complete send the completed application directly to Nutritional Services, 500 Dorset Street, South Burlington, VT, 05403.SB Mentoring

The donation included notebooks, paper, binders, writing utensils, and more. The donation was part of the SeaComm Pay-It-Forward Program, which enables the credit union and its staff to give back to local communities through random acts of kindness.
