2022 Institutes in Review...
In partnership with CCTE, the PBL Institute hosted 110 educators in June and August 2022. This resulted in 32 interdisciplinary projects to be launched in 12 middle and high schools across San Diego. A special warm welcome to new schools who joined us this year - Millennial Tech & San Diego Met!

PBL Exhibition @ LHS
On August 12, PBL Institute participants pitched their project ideas at an in-person exhibition hosted by Lincoln High School.
Job Shadow with Viridos
Teachers toured the labs and greenhouse of Viridos (formerly Synthetic Genomics), learning how algae is a powerful biofuel.

Micro-credential: PBL Foundations
Are you interested in deepening your PBL practice and leadership at your school and within the SDUSD network? To learn more about this micro-credential, watch the course overview video.
This micro-credential was designed to support teachers who have participated in the PBL Institute and are planning to implement PBL this school year.
"PBL Foundations" requires 15 hours of asynchronous learning, and will receive one Continuing Education Unit through UCSD Extension ($55 w/ $17 fee for transcript). For more information, visit the SDUSD Micro-credentials Website or email cmillow@sandi.net.
Together Again! Career Pathways Conference
SDCOE’s College and Career Readiness Team is hosting the Together Again! Career Pathways Conference in person on October 11 from 9am - 3pm at the Marina Village Conference Center.
The conference focuses on building a network for career technical education and career pathways teachers. Opportunities are provided to expand your network and learn from the best practices of others.

High Tech High PBL Leadership Academy
High Tech High is offering the Project-Based Learning Leadership Academy for 2022-23. The priority deadline for teams to submit the application is September 16th.
The PBL Leadership Academy is a year-long professional learning experience for diverse teams of California public educators committed to growing innovative project-based learning to close equity gaps for traditionally underrepresented students. Your team will design, implement, and share a personalized leadership project that addresses authentic needs in your school. There is a $650 per educator fee associated with this year-long opportunity.
Benefits include two in-person leadership institutes (Oct & Apr), monthly meetings with an educator-mentor, and 6 CEUs. For more information, email rscherer@hightechhigh.org.

Latinx Heritage Month: Sept. 15 - Oct.15
¡Celebrando! Latinx Heritage Month: Find events, online learning resources, and reading recommendations from the San Diego Public Library.
San Diego Unified recognizes the heritage of Hispanic Americans in our schools and city, and encourages all students, staff, and San Diego families to deepen their understanding of the Latinx community by celebrating their histories, cultures and contributions. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th and ends on October 15th to coincide with the independence dates of five Latin American countries who declared their independence from Spain in 1821: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Technology Tools for your Classroom
SDUSD has a number of FREE technology resources for educators. These include tools for:
- Communication: Zoom, Google Meet, and Remind
- Engagement: Adobe Express (formerly Spark), Screencastify, Book Creator, Flip (formerly Flipgrid), Pear Deck, Lanschool
- Formative Assessment: Pear Deck, Formative, Flipgrid, Google Forms
- Google Tools: Google Drive, Docs, Slides, Forms, Jamboard, Read & Write, and Sites

Curriculum Resources to Enhance PBL
- SDUSD One-Stop-Shop for Educators: includes links to resources such as Critical Concepts, Guaranteed & Viable Curriculum, & Standards-Based Grading.
- Deeper Learning HUB: customizable, thematic PBL courses for your students.
- Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance): free K-12 resources for educators to supplement curriculum, to inform practices, and to create inclusive school communities.
- Education Amplifier: provides free artwork, lesson plans and teaching tools that help facilitate non-partisan conversations around social justice in K-12 classrooms. They also have open calls for artwork.
SDCOE Work-Based Learning Opportunities
Receive access to the San Diego County Office of Education's Work-Based Learning opportunities, as they are made available, by completing the Work-Based Learning Training (30 minutes).
After completing the training, submit the Sign In for Work-Based Learning Training Form and the SDCOE College and Career Readiness Team will add you to their email list and send you the training presentation with links to WBL resources.
