The Emotional Toll of Legal and Financial Problems
Every day and in every city and state across this country, honorable people are unable to pay their bills or need help coping with current or past legal issues. There's nothing out of the ordinary about any of these circumstances—unless they're happening to you.
Legal and financial problems are usually accompanied by high levels of stress that take a toll on everything from weight, sleep patterns and moods to your very sense of self worth and overall satisfaction with life. Much of that stress is caused by underlying feelings of shame and fear.
"Shame and fear prevent many of us from seeking the help we need," says Liz Ferron, senior consultant for VITAL WorkLife. "Fear of what others will think or all the terrible things that 'might' happen can keep people from exploring the very information and perspectives that can help solve their problems."
While a lawyer or financial counselor may play an essential role in helping you address the practical aspects of your situation, a compassionate listener can help you manage the underlying issues and stress associated with solving whatever challenges you face.
"There's almost nothing you can say that will shock us—but you may be amazed to discover how many others have survived and thrived after a ride in the same boat," notes Ferron.
Free, Confidential Counseling: An Important Part of Your EAP Benefit
Your EAP benefit includes the following services at absolutely no cost to you:
Unlimited telephone consultation—simply give us a call at 1.800.383.1908 any time of the day or night that's convenient for you. Our master's- and doctorate-level counselors can help you tackle any challenge you face, large or small.
Face-to-face counseling for you and your family members—all you have to do is ask. (If you don't know how many sessions your benefit covers, ask your HR professional or give us a call at 1.800.383.1908.)
When you call, you won't get voicemail. A person will answer the phone and connect you to whatever resources you require. From there, it's up to you. You can ask for information and how to access resources. You can ask to be transferred to a professional for immediate counseling by phone.
"If you don't feel like discussing your problem over the phone, simply ask for a face-to-face counseling session," says Ferron. "We're here to help you in whatever way makes the most sense for you."
