LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
We are so lucky this year to have two student teachers in our classrooms right now. Student teachers (interns) bring new energy, fresh ideas, and curiosity. Supporting an intern means we get to examine our own practices, explain our methodologies, collaborate, and be open to new ways of serving students. It's the best!
In addition to serving as our new K-12 part time music teacher, Naomi Vliet has been student teaching with Joe Behnke and Kristen Maker in both middle and high school science classes. Naomi is a graduate of Lopez Island High School and a current student at Montana State University. She has done a great job as a student teacher and we are so delighted that she will stay with us as our music teacher after she graduates with her college degree in December.
Hannah Gibson is doing her internship with Lorri Swanson's 4th grade class. She has been working as a substitute and a paraeducator for LISD since 2019. She is attending Western Governors University, and her certifications will be in K-8 general education and K-12 special education. Hannah has been a joy to work with as a parent volunteer and colleague, and we are so thrilled that she has decided on a career in teaching.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and that you take some time on Veteran's Day to honor all who have served.
All my best,
Martha Martin

Salmon Eggs in the 4th Grade
Ms. Lorri's 4th grade class is now taking care of fertilized Chinook eyed eggs. Students can see the baby salmon's eye through the translucent egg. They should hatch by losing the outer egg casing by mid December. The salmon are then referred as alevin. They will survive on their egg yolk for a couple months. Once, the yolk sack is dissolved we'll begin feeding them. In May, we'll return the juvenile Chinook salmon to Long Live the King's salmon hatchery to be clipped and released into Eastsound.

Knives Sharpening Spots Available
School Chef John Shaw is offering knife sharpening service on Fridays. This service is a fundraiser for the school's LIFE (Lopez Island Farm Education) program.
The cost is $10 per person +$2/in per knife. So if you bring in three knives that are 6in long it would be $46 total.
Sharpening happens on Fridays, ideally you would drop them off in the morning and then John will have them done before 3pm. There is one spot available for next week. Email jshaw@lopezislandschool.org to get the next available slot.
