Weekly Update ~ January 25, 2016
Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
I was recently reminded of a great website to support math conversations with your children, talkingmathwithkids.com. While the most recent post is dated October 2015, I’m guessing it's because he’s a busy dad of two small children and they are out talking about math! With a toddler at home myself, I’m always trying to find ways to incorporate math into our conversations. We measure the height of her princess dolls. We also count the number of blankets we can stack on top of each other to make the perfect palette. But her favorite is lining up her dinosaurs in order of color, amount of teeth, or the number of back spikes (depending on her mood).
And yes, I consider all of those activities “doing math”. Granted, we are not solving for x but we are using reasoning skills, identifying patterns, and having fun! I challenge you to think of creative ways to embrace things your children love and turn them into fun math activities. Remember, you don’t have to love math but maybe, after you measure the spikes on your dinosaurs or see how many blocks you can stack before they tip over, you’ll like math too!

Honor Society News
The Oak Grove Honor Society is raising money for the Red Cross by putting a container in each elementary (grades K-5) classroom. Students are encouraged to bring in loose change to donate. This fundraiser will run from January 19th to January 27th. The classroom that raises the most money will win prize bags for each student in that class.
The Oak Grove Honor Society is also fundraising for Orphans of the Storm, a non-profit animal shelter that rescues dogs and cats for adoption. If your child is a sixth-eighth grader, please consider sending your child to school with money to donate. There will be boxes in each homeroom for the donations. The homeroom that raises the most money will get king sized candy bars for each student in that homeroom.
Immersion Spanish at Oak Grove – all ages
Join Fun Fluency on an afterschool aventura of learning a new language—the way your brain was meant to learn it! Don’t miss out on your child’s window of opportunity to learn a language with ease at a young age. Take your child's Spanish skills to the next level as students learn to converse and build great confidence in Spanish.
Students learn Spanish naturally through immersion, movement, games, songs, rhythm, reading, and acting out/listening to stories. Our storytelling-based method focuses on long-term retention, not just memorization. Students will quickly see how fun and easy it is to understand, read, and write in Spanish while being immersed in language, play, and laughter. This opportunity introduces your student to the many advantages of becoming bilingual and culturally aware at a young age. Check out all the fun we’re having with fluency at www.funfluency.com.
Please see the Virtual Backpack for more information.
