Horizon Elementary
From the Desk of Mr. Novotny
Parents and Guardians,
It is hard to believe that we only have one quarter left in the school year. Just a reminder that your child's report card will be posted in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal on Friday, March 31st. Please review the progress your child has made so far this year. We are proud of the hard work and resiliency students have put forth this quarter!
ISAT testing will begin this month, for 3rd through 6th grade students. Please remind your student(s) to do their best on these State assessments. We encourage the following:
- Ensure that your child gets a decent night's sleep.
- Make the morning of the test a pleasant one.
- Get your child to school on time the day of the test.
- Remind them to slow down, trust their instincts, and give their best effort.
- Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
- Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the questions and not to leave any blank.
Teachers will ensure that you are aware of testing dates.
As always please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Mr. Novotny

Horizon Elementary Parking Lot Protocol
This is a courteous reminder of our pick up and drop off protocols for the front parking lot at Horizon. It is important that we all work together to ensure the safety of our students and staff members.
We ask that you please remember to drive slowly and carefully through the school parking lot and around the school premises. There are pick up line markers and staff members to help convey the proper route. We also remind you to avoid blocking handicap parking spots and to not park in these spots unless you have a state issued handicap parking permit. We do have students and families that require regular access to these parking spots throughout the school day. In addition, the thoroughfares are not designated parking spaces. Please do not park or sit in these spaces as it causes congestion.
We really appreciate you working with our designated safety patrol to provide a safe environment for everyone at Horizon! If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
Class Placements
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Classroom placement at Horizon Elementary is a team effort involving the classroom teachers, parents, specialists, and principals. In an effort to provide the best education possible, Horizon staff will consider the class size, ratio of boys to girls, student abilities, special needs, and personalities of students and teachers. After consideration of all of the factors listed above, the principal will be responsible for making the final assignment. To help us determine optimum class placement for your child, you have the opportunity to provide us specific input regarding placement for 2023-24 school year.
If you would like input in your child’s placement for next year please click on the following class placement form link no later than April 15, 2023. If you cannot access this form please send an email to steve.novotny@boiseschools.org with an email that contains the learning style of your child, requested teacher's name, and the reason for the selection. The team, including your child’s current teacher, other current grade level teacher(s), school counselor, specialists, and administrator will take these recommendations into consideration as they work to create the class lists for next year. It is the goal of everyone at Horizon to have balanced classes of students who will be able to reach their highest academic potential.
Please keep in mind, there are no guarantees, but we will make every effort to honor requests.
Sincerely,
Steve Novotny
Principal Horizon Elementary

HORIZON: TITLE I
SCHOOL INFORMATION
Federal law requires that each school district receiving Title I funds notify parents of each student attending any school receiving these funds that information regarding the professional qualifications of their child’s classroom teacher(s) may be requested. As a parent of a student attending a school receiving federal program funds, you have the right to know:
Is my child’s teacher licensed to teach the grades and subject(s) assigned?
Is my child’s teacher teaching with a provisional license, meaning the state has waived requirements for my child’s teacher?
What is the college major of my child's teacher?
What degree or degrees does my child's teacher hold?
If there are instructional aides working with my child, what are their qualifications?
If my child is or will be taught for 4 or more consecutive weeks this year by a teacher who is not highly qualified, will I be notified in a timely manner?
What is Title I?
Title I is the largest federal aid program for our nation's schools.
What does Title I money do for a school?
Title I money is typically used to provide extra staff, materials or professional development for these schools. The program specifically supports reading and math.
How might Title I help my child?
A child attending a Title I school in the Boise School District may receive assistance in reading or math from a Title I paraprofessional. Paraprofessionals work in class with guidance by highly qualified teachers. They might work with small groups of students or one on one with a child. Children also benefit from training teachers receive or curriculum materials that are paid for with Title I funds.
How is a school eligible to receive Title I money?
The federal government measures a school's low income level by the number of students receiving free or reduced lunch. If the school meets the target percentage Title I status is granted.
How is a child eligible for Title I services?
All children attending a Title I school operating as a school wide program are eligible to receive services from Title I.
