Lothrop Sings the National Anthem at the Spartan Arena
On Saturday, Lothrop students sang the National Anthems at the Spartan Arena. Mack and Thomas represented Lothrop well by skating and carrying the Spartan Flags around the rink! Bailey, Carolyn and Chrissy participated in the puck shoot after the first period, and Jaxon won the “chuck a puck.” We had a great time at “Lothrop Night at Spartan Arena” and many Lothrop families joined us! We love this Lothrop tradition and appreciate all who came out to share the night with us!

What is happening in Spanish class?
¡Hola y feliz año nuevo! Lothrop Spanish students have certainly been busy in recent weeks. In December, students in all four grade levels pivoted from their respective units to embark on cultural studies of winter holiday and New Year’s traditions across the Spanish-speaking world. Fifth- and sixth-grade students began by taking a global view of Christmas traditions: our discussions and map studies underscored the fact that, while much of the world does not celebrate Christmas in a religious sense, the vast majority of Spanish speakers do, although celebrations in Spanish-speaking countries often look a bit different from the ones commonplace in Vermont.
We then learned about New Year’s and Día de Reyes (Epiphany, January 5-6) celebrations in Spain, with a particular focus on the New Year’s Eve tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight, each grape representing one month of good luck in the new year. For the culminating project of this unit, students completed “cartas de Año Nuevo” — New Year’s cards (pictured), with a design featuring the 12 grapes of Spanish New Year. Students brainstormed ideas for what they would wish for their loved ones in the New Year (a good exercise in selfless, magnanimous thinking!) and reviewed the months in Spanish; we also kicked off our subsequent unit on family, with students choosing a family member or friend to address their card to. I noticed that my kids were extra motivated to add their unique creative touch and to double check their grammar on these cards, since they planned to give them to their loved ones upon completion.
As we move into 2024, older students are doing a deeper dive into family-related vocabulary and concepts, with a mix of short stories, songs, and written work, all in Spanish. Younger students are continuing to build their basic conversational competency through a song and unit centered around emotions, weather, and daily routines. I can tell they have been working hard in Mrs. Bruce’s classes, because their singing is delightful, and hearing our third-graders sing in Spanish with excellent pronunciation, and after only a few months of Spanish classes, is a joy to behold! Check out this clip from yesterday of Ms. Pearsons’ third graders singing about their current emotions. This activity also incorporates an SEL (social-emotional learning) component, and leaves everybody feeling “tranquilos” (calm) and ready to learn. ¡Gracias por leer y hasta la próxima vez!
Reminders
Car Rider Drop Off/Pick Up Reminders
- Car drop offs and pick ups should occur in the lower lot only in the morning and afternoon.
- Please pull all the way forward so we can unload or load as many students at one time as possible, it really does make it go faster.
- Please remain in your vehicle, although we understand that some younger students still need help with seatbelts, if possible, please work with your child to be able to buckle their own seat belt.
- Please remember that student safety is our priority. Please do not park in the lot and ask your child to come to you or pass other vehicles in line.
- Please be patient, we're all working hard to make these times run smoothly. Thank you!

NEW Early Release Day on April 8, 2024
The OVUU school board has decided that we will have an early release day for students on Monday, April 8, 2024 because of the total solar eclipse that will take place on that day. Dismissal time will be the same as early release days; 11:30 dismissal for car riders and 11:40 dismissal for bus riders.
It's Cold Outside!
Recess
We have outdoor recess each morning and after lunch unless:
the playground is icy
it is raining
the temperature is less than 10°F
Children should come to school with jackets, hats, and mittens or gloves. When there is snow, please send snow pants and boots. Children in grades K-4, without boots and snow pants stay on the blacktop for recess.
If your child needs winter wear, please contact Melanie Parker.
Girls on the Run 2024 Information
Every Girls on the Run season, volunteer coaches foster empathy and acceptance by empowering participants to build strong connections with one another, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities, or beliefs. Throughout the program, girls learn to appreciate the beauty of diversity and grow into compassionate, understanding, and open-minded individuals. Become a GOTR coach at Lothrop School and play a vital role in developing these positive relationships.
Our 10-week season begins the week of March 18 and culminates on June 8th with a celebratory 5K event!. Our team will meet twice weekly for 90 minutes each session to connect, move, learn and have FUN! No running or coaching experience is required. Coaches are provided with comprehensive training, a curriculum that maps out each session, supplies and support from GOTRVT for an enriching season. Programs are for girls in 3rd-8th grade.
Visit gotrvt.org/coach to learn more or sign up to volunteer. Questions? Contact GOTRVT at anne@girlsontherunvermont.org or 802-871-5664.
