Critical Staffing Shortages in Healthcare and Education Update- What You Need to Know.
New Apprenticeship Funding to Address Shortage of Nurses and Special Education Teachers
Washington's Department of Labor & Industries and Washington Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced that will invest $5.6 million in apprenticeship programs for nurses and special education teachers.
The investment aims to ease the shortage of staff in these two industries. The grant will open the possibility of a new career in teaching to potential educators by providing training in certain school districts. Meanwhile, the program will focus on on-the-job training for licensed practical nurses in long-term care facilities serving veterans.
Business owners in these industries can now benefit from the apprenticeship programs by receiving trained staff. Read more about the program below.

What if we told you that there was a way to reduce your tax burden and grow your workforce at the same time?
It's no secret that it can be challenging to find qualified employees. You also know how costly it can be to pay taxes on your profits.
That’s where the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) comes in.
The WOTC is a federal program that rewards employers who hire people who face barriers to employment, such as veterans, ex-felons, or food stamp recipients. You can claim a tax credit for each eligible employee you hire, ranging from $2,400 to $9,600 per person, depending on their target group and hours worked. That means you can save money on your taxes while expanding your workforce and increasing your productivity.
To claim the WOTC, you only need to follow a few simple steps:
- Obtain and complete IRS Form 8850 and ETA Form 9061 for each eligible employee within 28 days of their start date.
- Submit the forms to your state workforce agency for certification.
- Claim the tax credit on your federal income tax return using IRS Form 5884.
Hire with confidence, help others become economically self-sufficient, and keep a little more money in the bank!
PacMtn is the hub for information about the area's labor market and business employment needs and helps job seekers explore career pathways. It is a nonprofit organization that supports business owners in Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific and Thurston Counties by providing innovative workforce solutions and creating pipelines of skilled workers. It is also the regional WIOA administrator, directing program activities driven by WIOA funding.
