A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
Thanks for a wonderful short week! I hope you enjoyed your break.
Please remember that next week will be Early Release and conferences will take place. The bell will ring at 12:05pm.
As you have noticed when you visit our beautiful doors, we have a wonderful security vestibule! We are excited about this additional layer of security for our school. The project is almost complete. There will be changes as to how we enter the building. I will send home details when it is done to help familiarize and welcome our families safely and efficiently. Thank you for your flexibility!
I wanted to mention that our 5th graders visited Twin Rivers Middle School today. They had the opportunity to tour the school and to see many of their connection classes. Before they arrived back at Woodward Mill, the Principal called to compliment the students, teachers, and counselor. I wanted to thank everyone that played a part in this event. We are a wonderful school community and it shows!
Have a Wonderful and Safe Weekend!
Your Principal,
Dr. Brown

Personal Safety Lessons in March
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, school counselors are required to present annual personal safety lessons designed to prevent sexual abuse. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role playing and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from abuse and exploitation. A committee of professional school counselors reviewed the program and selected components that were developmentally appropriate for elementary students and developed lessons around those concepts.
The materials will be available for preview from February 21-28. During the month of March, our school counselors will offer the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-5 students.
You can also learn more about the detailed lesson plans and research behind this program at www.childluresprevention.com. Please be aware that more information is provided on the website than is actually used in Gwinnett County. The plan for Gwinnett includes: the key concepts taught at all grade levels; each grade reviews what was learned in the previous grade(s) and then learns additional lures or tricks. A letter will also be sent home in your child’s Friday Folder with additional details.
If you prefer that your child not participate in the sexual abuse and safety prevention lessons, please write and sign a note indicating your preferences and send it to your child’s teacher or school counselor. As always, counselors are available to discuss any concerns you might have. Unless written documentation is received, your child will participate in the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons.
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of February is Kindness. Kindness means treating others in the way that we would like to be treated and going the extra step to make someone feel special. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during February to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
College and Career Day
We haven't been able to host this event in years, but this year our College and Career Day is scheduled for March 31st. This day will give students the opportunity to learn about nearby colleges and careers from individuals that can speak first-hand about their daily experiences. No book can teach them that!
We would love for you to come to our College and Career Day! The actual event is 8:30am-10:30am. Please let us know if you would like to speak to our students. You can email Chavonne O’Rear at chavonne.orear@gcpsk12.org for more information or to volunteer.
Book Fair Time: February 27-March 3
Be sure to look for the parent letter and the book fair flyer in today’s Friday folder!
The book fair will be a CASHLESS event this year. We are encouraging parents to create “eWallets” through Scholastic for their child to use when shopping at the fair. The “e-wallet” works like a gift card, with funds preloaded, so it is not necessary for students to have to handle cash.
Student “eWallets” can be set up any time prior to the start of the book fair! Click on the link below to get started!
Plan to bring your family to shop during the early release afternoons of March 1 and March 2. Parents are welcome to shop anytime during school hours! Credit and debit cards will be accepted from adult shoppers.
February 27-March 3
Read Across America, sponsored by the National Reading Association, is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading with the theme: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers. We look forward to celebrating reading with our Scholastic book fair during this week! Our celebration will include spirit days and reading prizes for some lucky students! We hope you will participate in these spirit days!
Every Monday throughout February, there will be a Who Am I? question posed in the Celebrating Black History eCLASS widget. Students will have until Friday of the week to submit their responses. Prize winners will be randomly selected, based on correct responses, and announced on the morning announcements every Monday. I hope you will encourage your child to participate!
Spotlight on Black History Month
Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahemd
When Little Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering. She wanted to be an astronaut. Her mom told her, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible."
Little Mae's curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents' encouraging words, paved the way for her incredible success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space. This book will inspire other young girls to reach for the stars, to aspire for the impossible, and to persist with childlike imagination.
February 1-28, 2023
It’s time for a new reading challenge! During the month of February, encourage your child to read and log at least 300 minutes!
Students will login to Beanstack using their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students are able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
Refer to the media center link of the school website for helpful resources to get your child started with Beanstack. Contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org if you have any questions about this digital reading program.
Join us on Facebook for more updates & upcoming PTA meeting information!
Does your child enjoy reading? Are they trying to read more for the monthly Reading Challenge in Beanstack? Look no further!
