Principal's Message
Hello Springwater Students and Families,
The 1st Quad has ended! Course grades for Periods 1-4 should be posted by Tuesday, November 17th. Congratulations students and families for making it through the first quad of distance learning!
Below you will see the schedule for Quad 2. It looks very similar to Quad 1. Most students will be focused on 3 classes plus Advisory instead of 4 classes. Period 8 will be for students needing credit recovery. We have begun reaching out to students and families this week and will continue our communication next week if a student needs to participate in 8th Period credit recovery.
Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are right around the corner! As a reminder: the conferences will look different this year, in light of distance learning. Conferences will occur virtually, via Google Meet, with advisory teachers. Conferences will run the evenings of Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th. The goal of these conference is for you to provide feedback regarding distance learning and to discuss your student's overall academic progress this year. Sign ups have been emailed out to you this week. If you did not receive it, please reach out to our office to verify your email and we can send it to you again.
There are still some students who need to pick up Quad 2 supplies. If you are one of them, please call the office as soon as possible to schedule a time to pick them up.
Stay safe and take care,
Ryan Blaszak

Return To Learn Survey
Recently the District shared with you the updated health metrics for schools released by Governor Kate Brown. While we are still a ways out from meeting the metrics that will allow us to bring students back into our classrooms, the Gresham-Barlow School District needs your feedback as we plan for the return of students to face-to-face instruction, so that we are ready when the metrics allow us to bring students back into our classrooms.
If you have not yet taken the survey, please do so. This critical information is needed so the District can plan for in-person instruction.

State Testing Opt-Out Notice
With the 2020-21 school year well under way, I wanted to take a moment to provide some important information about this year’s state tests. Last year, state testing was cancelled as we transitioned to distance learning. For this year, we are still waiting for guidance from the state regarding whether or not we will be offering state tests in the Spring. Even though we do not know what will happen this Spring in regards to state testing, we are still required to let you know about your rights as a parent regarding state testing.
ORS 329.479 establishes a Student Assessment Bill of Rights permitting parents or adult students to annually opt-out of statewide summative assessments in English language arts and Mathematics. The opt-out forms will not be available on the Oregon Department of Education website until later this school year. We will let you know when the opt-out forms become available. This notification will be sent to you at least 30 days prior to when your student would begin testing. More information about the annual opt-out / testing notification process can be found here:

In the Gresham-Barlow School District, we are deeply committed to inspiring and empowering each student and ensuring that every student in our schools has the support they need to achieve at high levels and graduate prepared for their next steps.
I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions you may have about your student’s progress.

Distance Learning Strategies
- Post a schedule of your classes close to your computer
- Set reminders for your classes on your phone / chromebook
- Find a quiet place to participate in Google Classroom meetings. (We understand this can be extremely challenging when everyone is stuck at home!)
- Work with family members to minimize disruptions during live class sessions.
- Remember engagement and communication are more critical than ever during distance learning. Communication is about human connection, understanding, and community: all of which are priorities for us and part of the reason you chose to attend Springwater!
- It can take time to become comfortable turning your camera on and there are other ways to show you are engaged. Below are some ways to communicate and engage during live class sessions:
-------> * Use your microphone to ask and answer questions.
-------> * Use the chat feature to ask questions and get clarification.
-------> * Let your teacher know (through the chat) if you have to step away from your computer for a moment.
