BV Schools and What’s in the News
The media and politicians are focusing much attention on public education these days. We celebrate the collective commitment to the education and wellbeing of our youth. It is a worthy dialogue for us all to engage. Unfortunately, not all that is highlighted in the news is the reality of your local schools. We welcome, invite, and encourage our families and community to contribute to the goodness of BV Schools. Our local school board is available to link to the community, the BV PEAKS (Partners Engaged Around Kids’ Success) meets regularly to exchange information about the schools, there are monthly meetings and this Monthly. Each month, we will begin sharing information about topics in public education and provide some perspective on what is happening in your local BV Schools.
The first topic is: Most third graders are not reading at grade level and the Science of Reading

BV SCHOOLS GOOD TO KNOWS
Anywhere from Here Movie to Benefit our Students
https://tickets.surfhotel.com/.../ski-movie-premier...
Let's break some records this year! The 8th annual BV ski movie premier and fundraiser is back. Your generosity goes towards helping local students with disabilities ski in the 2022-2023 season at the BOEC in Breckenridge, Colorado.
On November 4th, we will show MSP's newest ski film, Anywhere from Here, at the Surf Hotel's Ivy Ballroom in Buena Vista, CO. We will have an intermission partway through to have our HUGE Raffle! Each movie ticket comes with one raffle ticket, and more will be available to purchase at the door. All the proceeds from this event will support BV School's Special Ed class to go alpine skiing and snowboarding at the BOEC Adaptive Ski School (www.boec.org) in Breckenridge. Students receive private instruction, gear rentals, and lift tickets for each one-day session. It is a great opportunity for our students to experience what many of us take for granted.
We are excited to see you there.
Student Centered Accountability Program (S-CAP)
BV Schools values transparency and using multiple measures to ensure our system continuously improves for student success. Because of this commitment, the District is a member of S-CAP, a group of 18 other rural districts who expand accountability using a body of evidence. It also includes annual site visits during which reviewers observe classrooms, analyze our documents and student data, and conduct focus group interviews with families, staff, and students. Using all of this data, the reviewers leave ratings for our school district and analysis that is then used for district improvement purposes. BV Schools had their review on October 12 and 13. Leadership is currently reviewing results and will have these available to public with identified areas of strength and areas to grow. To view the S-CAP Accountability site for BV Schools that includes student results, ratings/information from previous reviews, and the District Priority Actions see go to our S-CAP website at: https://scapbvschools.com/ Join us on November 7 at 5:00 pm for the Monthly Family Meeting to learn more. Zoom link above.
Math Program Evaluation
Each year, the district reviews at least one program area. This year, mathematics will be evaluated. As part of this evaluation, the committee studies feedback from families, staff, and students. We appreciate families responding to this math program evaluation survey so we can continue to improve our teaching and learning of mathematics. Please complete a separate survey for each of your students. It takes about 3-5 minutes. https://forms.gle/8evYqkxhJ74KAtfM7
News from SRO:
On Friday, October 28th, The Buena Vista Middle and High School conducted its first Lockdown Drill of the school year. Several members of the Buena Vista Police Department worked with School Administration to conduct the drill quickly and efficiently as to limit the impact on the students’ class time.
After the drill, Law Enforcement and Administration met to discuss what went well and what could be improved on in the future. The drill went very well and the students and staff did a great job following our Lockdown protocols. All of the students and school staff took the drill very seriously.
For Avery Parsons and The Grove families, we will be conducting a Lockdown Drill at your students’ school in November. We conduct these Lockdown Drills to help us to be better prepared should a situation arise in the future. Although we feel very confident in our protocols and response, Law Enforcement and School Administration will continue to evaluate ourselves and make Buena Vista School Districts a safe learning environment for our students.

BVHS Principal Posting
Liz Barnaby was appointed as interim principal BVHS to fill a late opening for the position. We will begin the process for filling this position for the long term. The position will be posted this week with interviews at the end of November and hopefully a recommendation to the Board of Education in early December. This will allow much good planning for the coming year.
Scholarships
Please spread the word to businesses or families who may want to be part of our scholarships for high school students. See note from Mrs. Shane.
Dear Community Members,
I want to take this time to thank you for all of your years of service and generosity towards our senior students. Your scholarships over the years have helped 100’s of students pay their way through college, trade school, and university. Without your generous donations to their schooling, many would not have had the ability to finish, or attend.
As most of you are aware, some of our smaller organizations were hit hard by COVID, being unable to raise monies with which to offer scholarships to our students. Their years of support were so very valued. Thank you!
For those organizations who, for whatever reasons, can no longer offer our students these scholarships, we thank you for your years of generosity, and commitment to our students. We wish you all well. Thank you for supporting us for so many years, your generosity helped students embrace dreams.
If any new businesses are looking for a place to give back to their community, please consider a scholarship to a hardworking and deserving student hoping to attend a trade school or university. I can personally attest to how vital these scholarships are to our students. My own sons were recipients of our community scholarships, all finished their schooling, and those generous scholarships were vital to their ability to further their education. On behalf of our students who have worked so hard during their four years here, many are hoping to go to college and many will need a helping hand.
So, to all our community members, thank you for your consideration and ongoing support. Let us all remember to shop local and support our local clubs and organizations!
With respect and gratitude,
Jeanne Shane, Counselor, BVHS
