From Ms. O's Desk
Dear Quetzal Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. This week has gone by really fast. Our students have been working diligently in their iReady exams. I am looking forward to seeing their progress this trimester.
As you know, we are having our Parent-Teacher conferences next week. This is a great time for parents and teachers to talk about our students academic, language, behavioral, and socio-emotional progress this school year. We are looking forward to seeing you on campus.
As we approach the holiday season, let's remember to take some time to express our gratitude towards all of those around us that make our lives fuller and happier. Did you know that expressing gratitude is one of the five ways you can help wire your kid's brain? Isn't this amazing! As parents, one of the most important jobs to do is to give your child tools that will help them be successful, healthy, and happy. Being a parent is an extremely important task! Here are some tools to help your child work through losses, bounce back from disappointments, and be emotionally strong to face challenges in life. You can train your children to wire their brain for happiness and strength:
- Teach them to identify their emotions by asking them how actions make them feel, give them examples of feelings to express their emotions, and help them identify signs of anxiety and sadness.
- Help them practice and encourage gratitude by asking them what are they looking forward, identify when someone was nice to them, or name what they like about their house and school.
- Have them talk through positive actions by using small failures and losses as teaching opportunities. Teach them how to lose with elegance by congratulating their opponents. Ask them about what they do when they see another student sad or treated unfairly.
- Give them the space to make mistakes and work through them.
- And last, but very important, teach them responsibility. You can start by assigning them chores at home.
As always, your partnership educating your child at home is priceless. Thank you for all you do as parents at home!
