Northrop Newsletter
December 2023
Dear Northrop Families,
The holiday season is upon us and there's lots of excitement in the building! We have fun spirit days planned that all students have the option to participate in if you choose! See graphic below for the schedule.
We will continue to get some fresh air and utilize the playground with the NEW equipment (thank you, PTO) as long as temperatures are 20 degrees or above. Please send your student to school with appropriate outdoor clothing, labeled with their name. If you are in need of a coat, hat, gloves, etc., please email me at dodeza@medinabees.org.
We will also have classroom parties prior to winter break. Your student's classroom teacher will reach out with more information and only pre-approved volunteers will be permitted into the classroom for the parties.
The classroom parties will be 40 minutes each, so should be fun but simple. We're suggesting a small snack (all snacks MUST be store bought and pre-packaged), a simple craft, and a
game or other activity. For a list of allergen-friendly snacks, please visit the snack safely website by clicking here.
Thank you so much for your help and support in making our building a GREAT place for all!

As a prize for everyone's hard work during the Read-A-Thon, we enjoyed a visit from Cleveland Browns mascot, Chomps! He helped us announce top readers, took pictures with each class, and wowed us with his dance moves! It was a GREAT day!!
Early Release Schedule
Our next Early Release of this school year will be on Wednesday, December 20th.
K-5 arrival and tardy times are as normal. Dismissal is 1 hour earlier and begins at 2:20pm.
For preschool students, session times are as follows:
AM Session Time: 9:00-11:10
PM Session Time: 12:10-2:20
In addition to the early release on 12/20, we have early release dates on: 3/6/24, 5/23/24
School Safety
We continue to be committed to safety at school. Exterior doors remain locked at all times as do classroom doors when students are in the building. Anyone coming to sign a student out must wait in the vestibule and must show an I.D. Only adults who are added into Final Forms as a student contact are permitted to pick up a student.
PBIS
PBIS Rewards: Acknowledging Students When They Practice the 3Rs!
You may have heard your student talk about earning points at school. Students earn points if they are demonstrating the expected 3Rs behaviors. Simple things like remembering to use kind
words and actions, keeping hands and feet to self, following directions the first time or using
supplies correctly are just a few examples of how students can earn points. Teachers look for opportunities to “catch” kids making these good choices and award them points through PBIS rewards.
At the end of each month, students will be given the opportunity to shop in our school PBIS Rewards store. The store includes items (pet erasers, glow in the dark bracelets, etc.), privileges (PJ day, stuffed animal day), a special event each month (ex: movie and popcorn, bingo in the commons), and a raffle with surprise goody bags.

As an elementary school counselor, I am committed to supporting the social and emotional needs of our students and the families of the students we serve. In addition, I am also committed to supporting our staff here at school to ensure that we are meeting the individual needs of each student during the school day. By addressing social and emotional needs as well as academics, we work together to increase learning and academic growth for each student here at Eliza Northrop and Garfield Elementary Schools. As a school counselor, my typical services include small groups and/or individual meetings with students, as well as in the whole group, which is often in a classroom setting. I teach students new skills that can assist them with positive and appropriate emotional expression as well as in learning coping skills and the use of coping tools.

New Playground Equipment
Ever wonder what money raised by the PTO helps to fund? One example is the awesome new upgrades that were installed on Northrop's playground! Students are very much enjoying the new equipment and your support of the PTO helps support our students in this way and so many other ways!
COVID FAQs
Do kids have to stay home if someone in the family has COVID?
In general kids can come to school as long as they are feeling well unless they have tested positive for COVID. If a student tests positive for COVID, they have to stay home 5 days from symptom onset (symptom onset is day 0). On Day 6, as long as the student is feeling well, and has been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, they may return to school.
Are masks required days 6-10?
No, they are recommended and encouraged. Per the CDC, individuals should wear a well-fitting mask if they have symptoms of COVID-19, if they had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test in the past 10 days, or if they had recent exposure to someone with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
