JUNE 2022
Food Service Gearing Up for Summer
MCAS will again participate in the USDA’s Summer Feeding Program, providing nutritious lunches and breakfasts at no cost to all who are age 18 and under, at locations across the community. Meals will be served at Cleveland Park, Garden Estates, Green Acres, Joe Hawkins Park, Knapp Elementary, Lake Hills Elementary, Michigan City High School, Tall Timbers, Weatherstone Village, Woodland Crossing, and the Elston YMCA – in addition to many summer camps and programs. A complete list of service locations, dates, and times is available on our website at http://educateMC.net/summer.
Did you change your password?
As part of our continual process to increase security for all network resources, MCAS is updating our password policy for all MS Windows machines. Starting June 1, MCAS now requires all passwords to be at least 12 characters long, including a number, an uppercase and lowercase letter, and a special character.
When you change your windows password, your Google account password will sync to the new password. If you are not getting prompted to change your password you can restart your computer and then you should get prompted automatically when you attempt to sign in.
You must also make this change on a windows device and not a Chromebook. (If you only have a Chromebook, you can go to any windows device to log in and should get prompted to change your password.)
Here are the password requirements.
- 12 characters long (think of a short phrase instead of making a single word meet the length)
- At least one uppercase and lowercase letter
- At least one special character (e.g., !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, and *)
- At least one number
You can't use your name, username, or part of your name in your password.
Way to Go!
- A. K. Smith School Counselor Arminda Anguiano received the Colin Powell Service Award last Wednesday at the “Salute the Recruits Dinner,” sponsored by the Michigan City, Laporte, and Valpo Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. The event honored graduating seniors from across the region who will be joining the armed services. The Colin Powell award was presented to Arminda for exceptional service to students, school, and community. Navy Recruiter Bobby Weaver nominated her for the award.
- Krueger Middle School teacher Kevin Jones is part of a research team comprised of Purdue graduate students and professors that has received $25,000 grant from the Purdue College of Education. Their project involves using technology to help students learn taxonomy and classification of organisms – something addressed in 8th grade Indiana science standards. This innovative work will involve 8th-grade students and science teachers at both Barker and Krueger next school year.

Donors Chose MCAS!

In all, donors and partners across the country gave over $8.5 million to more than 64,000 teacher's classrooms across the country (in just 5 days! Woah!). In Michigan City Area Schools, $7,577 went toward classroom materials that week, making 14 projects one step closer to reality.

Shaman Will be Eating DOZENS of Donuts for Team M.C.A.S. June 3
Michigan City Area Schools will be represented by Athletic Director Craig Shaman this year in the Salvation Army’s annual Donut Eating Contest, which will be held on Friday, June 3 at Blue Chip. The doors will open at 9am, and the donut eating begins at 10am. This is open to the public, so come out and root for Craig - and also for Jessica O’Brien, who is eating donuts for the Rotary Club team this year. $10 tickets to support them and the Salvation Army will be available at the contest. GO WOLVES!
MCAS Receives "Helping Hands Award"
Michigan City Area Schools and the Michigan City JROTC Program were both honored with “Helping Hands Awards” on May 27 by the Salvation Army of Michigan City, at its annual volunteer recognition luncheon. The annual MCAS districtwide food drive contributed more than 4 tons of food to the Salvation Army’s food pantry this December, and the JROTC assisted with the Salvation Army’s holiday toy and food distribution – and with many other events throughout the year. Many of our student groups and staff members also volunteered and served as bell ringers. Congratulations and thank you to all!
